White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said it was “disgraceful” for CNN President Jeff Zucker to blame Donald Trump for the series of bomb scares that threatened Trump’s political opponents this week.
“I think it is absolutely disgraceful that one of the first public statements we heard from CNN yesterday was to put the blame and the responsibility of this despicable act on the president and on me personally,” Sanders said on Fox News.
“I find that disgraceful that that was one of the first statements is that they made this and tried to put the blame on the president,” she said.
CNN’s New York office was evacuated after a suspicious package was sent there for former CIA Director John Brennan, and several other suspicious packages were sent to the homes of Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama.
Zucker said in a statement that Trump’s White House bore some responsibility for the packages because of his inflammatory rhetoric against the media.
“There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media,” Zucker said.
“The President, and especially the White House Press Secretary, should understand their words matter. Thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that,” he added.
Sanders responded to Zucker Wednesday on Twitter by saying he was choosing to “attack and divide” instead of coming together.
