Melania Trump Spent Nearly $100,000 At Cairo Hotel And She Didn’t Even Spend The Night

The Trump administration has come under scrutiny for extravagant travel spending on the taxpayers’ dime. Quartz recently reported on the hotel bill for first lady Melania Trump’s recent one day trip to Cairo Egypt. Melania went on her first solo trip abroad in early October. Her trip included stops in Malawi, Kenya, Egypt, and Ghana.

According to a federal spending report, the American people paid the first lady’s hotel bill for her time in Cairo. The hotel cost over $95,000, despite the fact that Melania did not stay overnight in Cairo. That is right, the American taxpayers spent almost $100,000 on hotel expenses for Melania and her team when they were visiting only for the day.

The first lady and her team stayed at the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo for the one-day excursion to Cairo. The spending report does not indicate how many rooms were rented for Melania and her team. It does show that the “period of performance” for the bill was 9/30/218-9/30/2018, a period of a single day. The government spending report description of the expenditure as “flotus visit hotel rooms.”

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s spokeswoman, said that Melania did not “stay the night” at the hotel. She said instead, the first lady spent the day visiting the pyramids and attending meetings. Room rates for the hotel range from $119 per night to $699 per night.

This is not the first time the Trump family’s travel expenses have been questioned. In September, TMZ reported that the American tax-payers have spent $300,675 on golf cart rentals for the president.

Over the summer, in July, Democrats sent a letter to the acting inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security asking for information about Secret Service expenditures incurred while the president visited his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. The letter was sent in response to reports that the trip cost $1.2 million.
