Happy July 4th everyone!!
“Happy 4th of July” messages abounded on Twitter for the President on Thursday. However, it seems that well-wishers did not have the U.S.’s current sitting president, Donald Trump, in mind.
In fact, as “Happy 4th Mr. President” trended on Twitter, it was messages aimed at Trump’s predecessor, former President Barack Obama, that flooded the social media platform.
“Happy 4th Mr President. Your leadership, integrity and intelligence are sorely needed and missed,” one Twitter user wrote, sharing an image of Obama in the White House.

“Happy 4th Mr. President… Yes, I am referring to Barack Obama,” another said plainly.
Upon seeing the “Happy 4th Mr. President” messages being aimed at Obama, many expressed surprise, which for some, was overwhelmingly positive.
“Saw that ‘Happy 4th Mr. President’ was trending and I was depressed. Then I saw most of it was for this guy, a REAL President! And now I have hope,” one Twitter user wrote.
Another social media user shared a gif of the 44th president saying “This is a good day,” adding the caption: “Happy 4th. Mr. President! Waking up and seeing this was pretty great. Miss having a president with a brain in office.”
Social media users also speculated on what Trump’s reaction might be were he to spot the trend on Twitter, arguably his favorite social media platform, with one person writing: “Twitter: Happy 4th Mr.President. Trump: ‘Why than—’ Obama: ‘It’s for me’.”

Obama penned his own Happy Fourth of July message as well, also taking the chance to celebrate his daughter Malia’s birthday too.
“Happy Fourth of July, everybody! This is always a great day in the Obama family: a chance to celebrate America-and Malia’s birthday too. Hope all of you are able to get some time with friends, family, and fireworks,” he said.
