Mike Pence Attempts to Mock Joe Biden for Gaffe, ‘Let Me Be Clear, I’m the Vice-President!’

Mike Pence took a swipe at his predecessor on Friday, correcting a statement by Joe Biden in the previous night’s Democratic primary debate in which Biden suggested he was currently in office.

Speaking at a gathering of House Republicans in Baltimore, Pence ran through his top takeaways from the debate, bashing Democratic proposals like Medicare for All, when he noted Biden’s slip.

“By the way — I heard my predecessor said that, he was answering a question about his years in the White House and he said ‘I’m the vice president of the United States,’” Pence said.

“So let me be clear: I am the vice president of the United States of America,” he continued, gesturing at himself and prompting sustained applause from the audience.

Biden’s forceful statement came during one of the more contentious back and forths of the third debate in Houston, when he was pressed by moderator Jorge Ramos about the Obama administration’s level of deportations and Biden’s role in those removals.

It was the second time in as many debates that Biden was confronted about the issue, and he took flack from his rivals on stage both times when he attempted to distance himself and minimize the role he played in the deportations — a stark departure from his usual embrace of all things Obama.

When Biden attempted to dodge the question, pivoting to Obama’s record versus that of President Donald Trump, Ramos, a Univision anchor, continued to prod.

“You didn’t answer the question,” Ramos told Biden, which the former vice president objected to. “Did you make a mistake with those deportations?”

“The president did the best thing that was able to be done,” Biden responded, prompting a follow up from Ramos: “How about you?”

“I’m the vice president of the United States,” Biden replied, at which point Ramos moved on.
