Texas Republican Says The Only Answer to Gun Violence is ‘Praying to God’
After Texas’s second mass shooting in a month left eight people dead — including the shooter — and 19 injured in West Texas, an East Texas lawmaker took to Twitter to adamantly assert that he would not support any new gun restrictions.
On Saturday, Rep. Matt Schaefer tweeted that “Godless depraved hearts” were the “root of the problem.”
An hour later, he began a thread in which he called for no “red flag” laws or bans on AR-15 rifles and high capacity magazines. He also said there should not be mandatory gun buyback policies.
“Do something!” is the statement we keep hearing. As an elected official with a vote in Austin, let me tell you what I am NOT going to do. 1/6

I am NOT going to use the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans. Period. None of these so-called gun-control solutions will work to stop a person with evil intent. 2/6

What can we do? YES to praying for victims. YES to praying for protection. YES to praying that God would transform the hearts of people with evil intent. YES to fathers not leaving their wives and children. YES to discipline in the homes. 4/6

The tweets have since received thousands of responses, including public figures such as Piers Morgan, Soledad O’Brien, John Legend and Matthew Dowd. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, said, “This is why America has a 25 times higher rate of gun homicide than any other high income country.”
Texas lawmaker believes the Second Amendment was bestowed upon Americans by God. THIS is why America has a 25 times higher rate of gun homicide than any other high income country. #txlege

Others on Twitter disagreed that God was the answer:
People like this…. what can you even do with them? Which religion suggests ownership of an AR15 is a "God-given" right? We are fighting barbarism disguised as religiosity, white supremacy masquerading as godliness. Matt's small mind will just lead to more bodies in the streets. https://t.co/lMP122aks8

Owning an AR-15 is not a God-given right. https://t.co/bIqJVjD7Ud

And on the seventh day God did not rest. Instead, God said, “Let us deliver unto man an AR-15 that he might hold and use to deliver death and destruction to the planet and people I just Created.” https://t.co/of8KajmH8y
