Preet Bharara: Audio Tapes May Open Pandora’s Box

The only trial anyone has seen where evidence keeps coming to light during the trial.

Someone keeps unleashing evidence into the public in the run-up to, and during, the impeachment of Donald Trump.

The releases make life especially difficult for Republican senators attempting to keep witnesses out of the trial. The new evidence may just be the beginning.

Preet Bharara – former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, believes that Trump might have fired Yovanovitch solely to get her out of the way for bigger plans in Ukraine, including manipulating Ukraine into an investigation of Biden.

The fact that this tape exists means more evidence may also be out there, the fact it got releases now might mean an entire new trove of evidence is about to be opened:

“The problem is this is not existing in isolation,” continued Bharara. “There’s a whole series of events where she was standing in the way of the idea of Joe Biden and Burisma and the investigations. That takes it far beyond the phone call that triggered the impeachment inquiry … it is significant because it suggests that there are other tapes or other evidence that are going to be coming out in parallel fashion to the trial, to which people have been reporting may be over next week.

Unquestionably, this is the ultimate Republican nightmare. They vote to move forward without witnesses, and then acquit Trump, only to have evidence emerge shortly thereafter that is simply devastating to Trump and each Republican sitting in the senate.

Right now, Republicans believe that if they stick together with strict unity, they can overcome even the most obvious evidence – it has worked for them so far – yet none of them know what else is out there, each one must suspect there is evidence that no one could wave away.

What’s fascinating to me, that I’ve never seen in a trial, you have this procedure that comes out that sheds light on the proceedings and also may make it more difficult for Republicans to argue that they were right in preventing witnesses from testifying. So, there’s a whole bunch of Pandora’s boxes I think that could still be opened.”

Without a doubt, someone is signaling to Republicans – “There’s more out there, be very careful.”

The “more out there” stuff could well be a Pandora’s box. And, given that Preet Bharara was a beloved U.S. Attorney who worked closely with the NYC FBI, a person who must still have contacts within each organization, Bharara himself may be signaling that he knows there is a lot more evidence to come.

Stay tuned.
