Melania Trump joined her husband Donald Trump on Monday where he attempted to woo governors into reopening their states as the president accuses Democrats of leaving them closed for political advantage.

Donald Trump has pushed for states to reopen as part of his effort to jump start the troubled economy and against the advice of health experts, who warn it could bring a second wave of the coronavirus.

Some governors have resisted and Trump has blasted them for it.

Now he’s bringing in the first lady to shore up his fight. She joined him on the video conference call in in the White House Situation Room.

Melania announced her participation in the meeting Monday morning:

Looking forward to discussing #COVID19 response & recovery efforts w/ @POTUS @VP & our nation's governors today. I plan to address the mental hardship & safety this pandemic has had on children & families, & what states can do to help.

According the The New York Times Maggie Haberman, Trump might be doing this because Melania is more popular than he is.

The First Lady is joining her less-popular husband tomorrow for a call with governors. She has advocated mask-wearing as the president has treated it dismissively until the last week. And she could have a softening effect on a president trying to resurrect the 2016 playbook.
