Another Poll Shows the Trump Campaign in Free Fall, as Trump Doubles Down It’s Only Getting Worse

We have seen the signs everywhere. It appears that Trump’s hellish weekend hunkering in the bunker, and then his emergence to gas innocent Americans and hold up a bible, turned Trump’s campaign upside down last month and it’s only getting worse. Since that time, week after week, Trump’s campaign has been in a free fall, culminated by the Tulsa “Shitstorm Debacle,” or “Shibacle” in the words of some on Twitter.

Two weeks ago a CNN poll showed Trump down 14 points in the general election to Joe Biden. Last week it was a Fox News poll showing Trump down 12. The Real Clear Politics average slipped to Trump – 9.5 points. This morning, the solidification of Trump’s double-digit deficit sets in firmly with another 14 point deficit brought to us by the New York Times and Sienna College, via Rawstory:

A New York Times/Sienna College national survey released Wednesday morning showed presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden with a strong 14-point lead over President Donald Trump, a finding one journalist described as “one of the most grim polls I can think of seeing recently for an incumbent.”

“Grim” is in the eye of the beholder. Some of us would describe it as “life-affirming,” restoring our faith in mankind.

“Among a striking cross-section of voters, the distaste for Mr. Trump has deepened as his administration failed to stop a deadly disease that crippled the economy and then as he responded to a wave of racial-justice protests with angry bluster and militaristic threats,” the Times reported. “The dominant picture that emerges from the poll is of a country ready to reject a president whom a strong majority of voters regard as failing the greatest tests confronting his administration.”

Stop, NYT. Stop right there.

True, COVID and the economy are definitely not helping Trump, indeed the two likely took Trump from the mid-40s (losing by 3-5) to the low 40s (losing by 5-8). But if one simply wants to align the polls and dates, it wasn’t until Trump started cracking heads after George Floyd that the country took a vicious turn away from Trump.

One can doubt this country’s sincerity about racism, or its ability to follow through on stated goals, but one can’t doubt that the numbers show it took the country prioritizing Black Lives Matter and the call for unity before the rejection of Trump went to “double-digit” levels. It is fitting, since the last time Trump’s approval rating was in the high 30s was right after Charlottesville.

We will watch this closely, but we know that Trump won’t change his approach (racism appears very near to his heart), and we know that the country is demanding far more.
