Sarah Huckabee Sanders Says Coronavirus Deaths Would’ve Been ‘Much Higher’ if Trump Wasn’t President

Every now and then, former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pops up like a nightmare from our past to remind us that she still is just that — a nightmare from our past. This time she’s here to fluff our former boss’s feathers by defending his shoddy response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview [1] on Fox News Tuesday morning, Sanders compared Trump favorably to a hypothetical president, saying more Americans might have died from coronavirus if someone other than Trump were president, according to PoliticusUSA. [2]

“Let’s go back to the basics for Donald Trump — change agent, disrupter, outsider,” she said.

“That is a winning message for this president, and I think if he stays focused on it, he’s going to do extremely well in November.”

That led Fox host Steve Doocy to ask if the 125,000 [3] deaths and continually escalating numbers would be problematic for Trump. He noted Trump is being criticized for the way he’s handled this pandemic.

“Yeah, I think if Donald Trump hadn’t been president, that number could have been much higher, and could’ve been much worse.”

So, 125,000 deaths aren’t bad enough? Does this woman live in the same world as the rest of us? Of course, more people could have died under another president, but it’s pointless to debate this because people are still dying under the current president.

But Sanders has more praise for Trump despite this (I’ve included her responses in the video below.)

“Thankfully the president took some [4] early steps, like stopping travel — which a lot of Democrats criticized him for,” she said. “One of the other things that Donald Trump did that I think was truly remarkable, that he gets no credit for, is that he got government out of the way.”

Yeah, the government was definitely out of the way when Trump visited a Maine testing facility and inadvertently swabs that would have been used to test for coronavirus. Admittedly, it was a small number [5] of swabs, but is that really a good idea when we’re in the midst of a pandemic. And let’s not forget that his administration paid millions [6] for “test tubes” that turned out to be unusable.

Because that’s what happens when the government gets “out of the way.”

But these facts aren’t Sanders’s thing, and she lauded him for allowing companies to get game.

“He allowed for American companies to step up — American ingenuity to take over when we needed supplies and resources,” Sanders said. “He cut the red tape, and let Americans do what they do best.”

One wonders what Sanders will do when her former boss is out of the presidential equation.
