SHOCK POLL: Amy McGrath Takes Narrow Lead Over Mitch McConnell In Kentucky Senate Race

Kentucky Democratic senatorial candidate Amy McGrath is enjoying a slight lead over Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the heated race for the Senate, according to a recent poll.

The polling was conducted by RMG Group, shows McGrath has the support of 41 percent of voters, while McConnell is slightly behind, at 40 percent, Newsweek reports. However, when voters are informed that McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot, supports congressional term limits, while McConnell does not, voter support for her jumps significantly.

The poll found that 45 percent of respondents favored McGrath when the candidate’s positions on term limits were factored in. Just 30 percent of voters favored McConnell. However, 17 percent of the folks surveyed remained undecided, while eight percent said they’d vote for a different candidate.

The archly conservative McConnell is the longest-serving Kentucky senator in U.S. history, having entered the Senate in 1985. He proudly claims the title “Grim Reaper,” and brags about his record of scuttling Democratic legislation. In April 2019 he said he planned to block any progressive Democratic legislation offered in the Senate if Republicans still hold the majority following the November elections.

“If I’m still the majority leader of the Senate after next year, none of those things are going to pass the Senate,” he told an audience of Kentucky supporters.

“They won’t even be voted on,” he said. “So think of me as the Grim Reaper: the guy who is going to make sure that socialism doesn’t land on the President’s desk.

Democrats have made ousting McConnell a major priority, but Kentucky is deeply conservative, which means doing so is quite a challenge. Fortunately, McGrath has gained a significant amount of money while fundraising for the first quarter of 2020. As of April, she’d raised $12.8 million compared to McConnell’s $7.5 million.

While she hasn’t quite clinched her party’s nomination, since the Kentucky primary isn’t held until June 23, McGrath is among several other candidates vying for the nomination. And she’s the one who’s received the most support and attention from her own party.

And that’s encouraging news for Kentuckians growing weary of McConnell’s undying support of President Donald Trump and continued oppression of the poor.

“What this shows is that after 35 years of Mitch McConnell’s partisanship and dysfunction, Kentuckians are ready for change,” said Terry Sebastian, McGraths’ senior communications strategist, in a statement to Newsweek. “Lieutenant Colonel Amy McGrath believes in ending life-long careers in the Senate and strongly supports a limit of two terms. Mitch McConnell has proven that being in office for decades has led to the politics of destruction and the Washington, D.C. swamp that everyone hates.”

Let’s hope McGrath continues to fundraise effectively. Ridding the Senate of McConnell can serve as the beginning to draining the swamp.
