Trump Administration Plans To Blame Second Wave of Coronavirus On Mexico

Donald Trump has frequently blamed Mexico for sending “bad hombres,” disease, and other ills to the U.S.,  and now his administration is investigating whether travel from the country could be bringing in additional coronavirus cases, as opposed to states efforts to reopen and revitalize their economies, The Detroit News reports.

That was the topic of discussion Thursday as the administration’s coronavirus task force met in the White House Situation Room in the hopes of finding commonalities between new outbreaks.

In lockstep with this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has been sending teams to Arizona and other hotspots in an effort to trace the origins of the outbreaks and contain them.

California, Texas, and North Carolina have also been hit with spiking infections, especially within the Hispanic community. This is leading the task force to examine whether those spikes stem from legal international travel between the U.S. and Mexico, where outbreaks have been severe.

In an interview with the Associated Press, two officials familiar with the discussions spoke on conditions of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the internal conversations.

Trump has repeatedly tried to seal the border between the U.S. and Mexico against immigrants, with mixed results, but Americans and permanent residents are still allowed entry into the U.S. That’s also true for agricultural workers as well.

The task force is also investigating other possible reasons for the uptick in infections and notes the numbers likely vary from one location to the next. And delays in test reporting, coupled with the fact that some infected people are tested numerous times in order to be cleared to go back to work are some of the possibilities also being explored.
