Brilliant New Ad Warns Conservative Christians: ‘Trump Is Using Us’

Never Trump Republican groups like The Lincoln Project and Republican Voters Against Trump are stepping their game up, spending millions on ads that warn their base — conservative Christian voters — that Trump is merely “using” them and that they shouldn’t vote for him in November.

And the ads produced by Republican Voters Against Trump, which has such notable members as Bill Kristol and Tim Miller, a former aide to Jeb Bush, are running on digital and television channels, The Christian Post [1] reports. They feature testimonials from Republican voters about why they won’t be voting for Trump this time around.

The organization will funnel $10 to 15 million in 2020 to hopefully unseat Trump and elect former Vice President Joe Biden, Sarah Longwell, one of the organizers of the initiative told the Post. Swing states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin are being targeted.

“It will be mostly digital with some TV,” she said. “On TV they have to be 30 to 60-second spots. But a lot of what we are going to do digitally is just running the unfiltered testimonials from people. That’s really what the project is built for. We spent a lot of time thinking over the last couple of years how to defeat Donald Trump in 2020.”

One ad, titled “Trump Is Using Us,” debuted in North Carolina last week and it’s aimed squarely at Christian voters, one of Trump’s largest voting factions. Trump ran on promises of promoting pro-life policies, protecting religious freedom. He also promised to appoint conservative justices. But he’s continually disappointed these people as one person notes below.

“I grew up in the church,” says “Tommy” a Republican voter. “You look at a way someone lives their life, and you believe them,” as the commercial jumps to the infamous audio clip where Trump says he likes to grab women “by the p**sy.”

“Pat” another Republican notes that he doesn’t like the fact that Trump used force to “bludgeon and gas” peaceful, unarmed protesters at a Washington Park in June just so he could stand in front of a church and hold up a Bible for a photo opportunity.

“The moment that he held up that Bible, he revealed that this president is using us,” Pat said. “Christians have to resist being used to justify things that Jesus would never justify.”

The advertisement features a montage of Trump’s abhorrent behavior, including a snippet of him calling white supremacists “very fine people” in the aftermath of the deadly Charlottesville protests in 2017.

“What’s going on now is wrong,” says one man named “Shawn.” “And as a Republican, as a Christian, we simply cannot allow this man to reelected.”

The ad that ran in North Carolina is one of a virtual fusillade of ads that Republican Voters Against Trump will run this year. All are aimed at conservative voters.

“All of our research showed that what worked best with potentially persuadable voters, especially women, is other Republican voices talking about why they can’t support Trump in 2020 and in fact, can support Joe Biden,” Longwell said. “If you watch a bunch of the videos, the testimonials are very powerful. We have been testing them to see which ones are the most persuasive with our target audience. We are just going to run those unfiltered, unedited, [targeted] at voters in the swing states.”

While the organization isn’t targeting down-vote Republicans, The Lincoln Project is openly going after Trump and Senate lawmakers who have favored him. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are you listening? The organization is purchasing six-figure ads aimed at bringing down the two senators, and some of their colleagues, including Martha McSally (R-Ariz) and Joni Ernst (R-IA).

I’m including the video for Republican Voters Against Trump because it’s powerful and effectively encapsulates some of Trump’s worst behavior. I find it a hopeful sign that this man’s days as president may well be numbered. We can only hope.
