Trump Avoids Holding Melania’s Hand in Public Because it’s Not ‘Manly’ and He Thinks He’s an Alpha Male
Melania Trump has been known on occasion to slap her husband, President Donald Trump’s hand away but apparently he’s also uncomfortable about holding her hand as well, notes one publication. The president’s body language poses a jigsaw puzzle for anyone trying to understand it, but more than a few people have noticed he’s lately avoided holding Melania’s hand in public.
The couple has been married for 15 years, but Trump has lately been seen patting Melania’s hand away, Marie Claire reports.
Of course, this is puzzling behavior but then nearly everything Trump does is puzzling. In this case, however, says one body language expert, he may be trying to seem like an alpha male and leader. As opposed perhaps, to acting like an actual leader by making decisive moves to end the coronavirus pandemic and provide healthcare for all. You know, things like that.
But no. Instead Patti Wood, the expert mentioned above tells Mail Online:
“Typically a hand-hold shows a couple as a unit,” she said. “But to me, I think he’s saying, ‘I want to be seen as the president on my own,’ which is very alpha. ‘I want to be just the powerful me.’ And it’s clear that that’s his choice.”
It’s a sad contrast to the close relationship former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle share, Marie Claire notes. The Obamas have been photographed holding hands on a number of occasions and he’s frequently credited her for helping him.
When asked about Trump’s reluctance to hold his wife’s hand, Wood explained it’s just not something he does.
“He doesn’t want to do it in public,” she said. “It’s very clear that she does, she would like that. That would make her feel connected and she would get some of that power and confidence, and he’s saying ‘No, not in public.'”
Why she would want to hold his hand in public is anyone’s guess, but it’s kind of sad that he doesn’t do this. It would at least make him seem human if he did.
