Evangelical Trump Supporter Says That Mike Pence is Like a ‘Submissive Wife’ to Trump

Evangelical Christians still widely support President Donald Trump despite his many moral failures and in an interview with The New York Times’s Elizabeth Diaz, some also said they believe Vice President Mike Pence doesn’t get enough credit for supporting his boss.

In talking with Christians at Sioux Center, Iowa, Dias discovered that they still strongly support Trump despite his lack of morality and his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic and an economy that’s in the toilet. And she found they had more than a few reasons for supporting Trump in 2016, including “That they saw him as their best chance in decades to end legalized abortion. That the opportunity to nominate conservative justices to the Supreme Court was paramount. That they hated Hillary Clinton, or felt torn to pick the lesser of two evils. That they held their noses and voted, hoping he would advance their policy priorities and accomplish their goals,” Raw Story reports.

For Micah Schouten, Trump is someone who will reestablish Christian values.

“You are always only one generation away from losing Christianity,” he said. “If you don’t teach it to your children it ends. It stops right there.”

And Pence is well-known for his Christian views, which means he had more than a few fans among those whom Dias interviewed. Especially because he is so supportive of Trump.

“This is probably a very bad analogy, but I’d say he is like the very supportive, submissive wife to Trump,” said Caryn Schouten. “He does the hard work and the husband gets the glory.”

I’m trying very hard to remove that image from my brain. I can’t imagine what “hard work” Pence has done and I can’t possibly imagine anything that Trump has done that deserves “glory.”

But Schouten is on a different wavelength.

“If you are a hard-working Caucasian-American, your rights are being limited because you are seen as against all the races or against women,” she said. “Or, there are people who think that because we have conservative values and we value the family and I value submitting to my husband, I must be against women’s rights. I would say it takes a stronger woman to submit to a man than to want to rule over him. And I would argue that point to the death.”

I don’t know how to unpack this level of deluded thinking. First of all, we are all one race (Homo sapiens sapiens), and it would be nice if Christians like Schouten would ever figure this out. And it’s all well and good that she prefers to “submit” to her husband, but there are many women (myself included) who don’t do this. We don’t want to rule over anyone except ourselves.

But as I said, Schouten is on a different wavelength.

“I do not love Trump,” she said. “I think Trump is good for America as a country. I think Trump is going to restore our freedoms, where we spent eight years, if not more, with our freedoms slowly being taken away under the guise of giving freedoms to all. Caucasian-Americans are becoming a minority. Rapidly.”

I wonder what Mike Brown, murdered by cops, Trayvon Martin, murdered by George Zimmerman, and George Floyd, also murdered by cops would have to say about “our freedoms slowly being taken away.” Their freedoms were taken away and they had no choice at all. And what about Breonna Taylor, also murdered by cops? Her freedom was taken away too. These Caucasian-American Christians get a tiny violin from me.
