It’s Been Four Years Since Trump Promised a News Conference on Melania’s Immigration History — Still No Answers

For a man who is so proudly anti-immigrant, Donald Trump has sure sought to help a lot of certain types of immigrants, specifically young white women, aka “girls,” from eastern Europe.

Remember that it was Donald Trump who ran a modeling agency, “Trump Model Management” or “T-Models” as it was later shortened.

The modeling agency was accused [1] of employing many girls and young women who came to the United States on tourist visas. Trump also married an immigrant from eastern Europe, another young white woman, who was here on … no one is exactly sure how Melania got her citizenship or how all that worked out.

Indeed, all of the questions that arose in 2016 about Melania’s immigration procedure are still hanging out in 2020.

Yes, we were told that answers were coming about this particular model from Slovenia who happens to be married to Trump and was purportedly the recipient of an Einstein Visa, the type set aside for people who can cure cancer, compose a symphony, or throw a 92 mile per hour slider.

Back in 2016, we were told we would be hearing soon: [4]

Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that his wife will hold a news conference “over the next couple of weeks” to address reports that she violated immigration laws when she first came to the U.S. Trump said his wife would prove that “she came in totally legally.”

The New York Post last week published nude photos of Melania Trump in 1995, quickly raising questions [5] about whether the former model had obtained the appropriate visa to work as a model in the United States.

We are almost certain that we saw more nude photos, but we know that we never saw a Melania news conference explaining her immigration status. We were younger then, perhaps we actually thought there was a chance that Trump would feel compelled to address the matter eventually. He never did, even though he was awfully cocky about it:

“They said my wife, Melania, might have come in illegally. Can you believe that one?” Donald Trump told his supporters Tuesday. “Let me tell you one thing. She has got it so documented, so she’s going to have a little news conference over the next couple of weeks. That’s good. I love it. I love it.”

We don’t love it.

One of the only things we know with certainty is that Melania lied [6] about having a degree during a deposition and in the program for the RNC convention in 2016. We also know that it’s a really bad idea to lie about one’s background when doing immigration documents and that people who do lie run a big risk … usually. So most people would never lie in such a situation.

We never have gotten any adequate answers on how Melania came to be an American, “Mrs. Trump,” and the new Jackie Onassis of the Right. We wonder if the news conference will be next week.
