Donald Trump has sure been busy!

On Saturday, Trump sent out a tweet that accused Andy McCabe – a Trump “enemy” for daring to lead the FBI, an organization that Peter Strzok implies has the goods on him – accused his “enemy” of illegally taking money on behalf of McCabe’s wife from Hillary Clinton. Trump wrote:

“Was Andy McCabe ever forced to pay back the $700,000 illegally given to him and his wife, for his wife’s political campaign, by Crooked Hillary Clinton while Hillary was under FBI investigation, and McCabe was the head of the FBI???

This contains vicious lies that feed the MAGA head narrative because they’ll never know the truth. They will take this as gospel and use it to conclude that everything out of the FBI is corrupt. Some believe that Trump’s goal all along has been to cast doubt upon any disclosure about his contacts with Russia by ruining the FBI’s reputation with his supporters.

Let’s start with Daniel Dale’s CNN breakdown of the lies:

There are two false claims in these 14 words alone. McCabe himself did not receive any donations, and the donations were not illegal.

Two down. There is simply no record that any of the publicly reported donations were illegal, and yet Trump has a long and storied history of accusing others of illegality, and his reasons seem transparent.

Sigh. Hillary Clinton didn’t donate any of these funds. They were donated by the DNC and a Virginia Democratic PAC. But hey, why not?

…and McCabe was the head of the FBI?

This might even be the worst, saved the best for last. McCabe wasn’t head of the FBI in 2015 when the donations were made. He was high up, but he wasn’t the head of the FBI.

Remember back when the president’s words were fact-checked over a million times? Every word was sacrosanct? It may have been a bit leading, but they could at least back up the truth? A bit? Yeah, it was five years ago. Trump is shameless.
