Mike Huckabee Doesn’t Care if Trump Commits Tax Evasion, ‘I Didn’t Elect Him to Be My Tax Accountant!’

Even though The New York Times has just released an exhaustively-researched report on President Donald Trump’s taxes — one that shows he paid just $750 in federal income taxes in the year he was elected president and then paid another $750 during his first year as president, while also revealing he’s hemorrhaged hundreds of millions of dollars, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) doesn’t think that’s such a big deal.

“Well, first of all, it’s The New York Times,” Huckabee said on Fox News & Friends. “I’ll tell you what I make of it, is when The New York Times says something about Donald Trump, I kind of blow it off as totally lacking in credibility. Because how many hours, I wonder, have they spent? And what are their documents for this? They don’t tell us.”

Obviously, Huckabee hasn’t taken time to read the information, which clearly shows meticulous research over perhaps a period of days, weeks, and possibly months. But this is Mike Huckabee, after all, and he’s on Fox News, where you can be sure millions of viewers will digest this without bothering to question anything.

As Media Matters for America notes, he continues to defend the embattled president.

“But let me give you this,” he said. “So what? In a big business operation that he runs, there is a good likelihood that with all the various business losses that he had from running for president when he wasn’t overseeing his business, maybe that’s so. I don’t know. Frankly, I don’t care.”

This, to me, is a weird defense of the president. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve never heard of another president running into this much debt. Obama somehow managed to avoid this, and so did George W. Bush before him. Yet it’s okay that Trump is doing this when you can bet Republicans would lose their minds if Obama rang up such a ginormous bill.

That’s lost on Huckabee though. He thinks Trump is doing a bang-up job as president.

“I didn’t elect him to be my tax accountant,” he said. “I elected him to be president, and I’m really happy with the job he’s doing. And when The New York Times blows this horn, you know, I’ve just got a complete hearing loss for it.”
