Remember Melania Trump’s Famous Inaugural Day Scowl? It Turns Out Barron Was Behind It All Along

The past few weeks have no doubt been challenging for Melania Trump, due to her tone-deaf speech at the Republican National Convention and the blockbuster tell-all book Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of my Friendship with the First Lady, by Stephanie Winston Wolkoff. The book casts light on her parenting style and the now-infamous #FreeMelania frown that launched a thousand memes.

The memes were ignited by a viral video clip where Melania is seen smiling broadly at President Donald Trump then frowning when he turns his back, Yahoo!Life reports. The resulting multitude of GIFs, clips, and tweets sparked debates over Melania’s feelings about her husband. Winston Wolkoff’s book paints a different picture, however, because the First Lady apparently discussed the situation with her.

“Viewers of the footage assumed that she only smiled when Donald was watching, and as soon as his eyes were off her, she let her true contempt show,” Winston Wolkoff writes. “It wasn’t at all what had happened.”

So, why did Melania frown?

“Barron had kicked her in the ankle,” Winston Wolkoff noted, adding that Melania told her the story later, telling her that “it hurt.”

And apparently the author tried to convince Melania to tell the press what happened in order to put a stop to the #Free Melania fracas.

“As her advisor, I suggested she set the record straight about the #FreeMelania frown,” Winston Wolkoff writes. “She said, ‘Who cares what they think? … I don’t owe them an explanation.’ ‘They’ happened to be the American people.”

It’s anyone’s guess as to whether Melania decided this out of concern for Barron’s privacy or for her own, but by trying to let the incident slide by it made her seem cold and uncaring. I remember feeling momentary empathy for her when she frowned because Trump is such a jerk but that empathy was very short-lived. If she’d explained the situation, we could have understood her concerns about Barron’s privacy. If she really has any such concerns, that is.

Here’s the famous frown below.
