John Oliver is Not a Fan of Melania Trump and Lets the ‘Totally Complicit’ FLOTUS Have It

On Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver gave a detailed account of how the World Health Organization (WHO) works and why Trump’s insistence on the U.S. leaving the organization is a bone-headed idea. But the popular HBO host also couldn’t resist taking a slap at Melania Trump by noticing the parallels between the First Lady and her husband’s insistence about leaving the WHO at the beginning of the pandemic.

“Now that is very bad news. Do spare a thought for Melania, who must have heard the sentence, ‘We will be today terminating our relationship,’ and for the briefest moments felt hope,” Oliver said. “Except I’m totally kidding, spare no thoughts for her, she’s not a baby, she’s totally complicit, and never forget that she did once say, ‘Who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff and decorations?’ Which was fully present in her holiday theme, best described as ‘What if trees got periods and hated you?'”

It’s also been noted she didn’t give a “fuck” about her husband’s policy of separating families at the U.S./Mexico border, in which she said, at one point “Oh, what about the children that were separated? Give me a fucking break.” Then she wore that obnoxious “I don’t really care, do U?” coat when she went to visit kids incarcerated at a Houston detention center.

While Melania Trump is correct that the Obama administration also incarcerated kids crossing over the border, the situation really was different because most were crossing without their parents, noted former Obama administration National Security secretary Jeh Johnson, according to a fact-check conducted by USA Today.

Referring to a photo that was taken of himself and former Arizona governor Jan Brewer as they visited a facility in that state, Johnson had this to say:

“The photograph you’re referring to was a facility in Arizona — I recognize the photograph because Governor Brewer was with me — and it was during the spike … and we had a lot of unaccompanied kids, we had a lot of family units,” he said. “And under the law, once they’re apprehended by the Border Patrol, within 72 hours, we have to transfer unaccompanied children to the (Department of Health and Human Services). And HHS then puts them in a shelter, and they find placement for them somewhere in the United States.”

“You can’t just dump seven-year-old kids on the streets of McAllen or El Paso,” he explained. “And so, these facilities were erected … they put those chain links up so you could segregate young women from young men, kids from adults until they were either released or transferred to HHS. Was it ideal? Of course not.”

At the highest point, the Obama administration held 53,515 kids from 2013 to 2014 but Trump’s administration has eclipsed this, holding 72,593 kids between 2018 and 2019, NPR notes.

And that brings me back to John Oliver’s point about Melania Trump. Because she quite obviously doesn’t care that tens-of-thousands of kids were imprisoned under her husband’s watch. So we definitely shouldn’t care when her husband loses come November.
