Trump Changes His Religious Affiliation From Presbyterian to Non-Denominational Christianity

President Donald Trump said he no longer considers himself a Presbyterian and instead sees himself as a non-denominational Christian, he noted in a statement to Religion News Service. Which contradicts what I’ve thought about him all along — that he’s a hypocrite when it comes to religion and only uses it when it benefits him to do so.

I mean, after all, he’s derided the evangelicals who follow him and laid their hands on him in prayer by asking, incredulously:

“Can you believe that bullsh*t?”

But in the statement, he tells RNS “Though I was confirmed at a Presbyterian church as a child, I now consider myself to be a non-denominational Christian.” He’s repeatedly identified himself as a Presbyterian in the past and said his parents “taught me the importance of faith and prayer from a young age.”

“Melania and I have gotten to visit some amazing churches and meet with great faith leaders from around the world,” he wrote. “During the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak, I tuned into several virtual church services and I know that millions of Americans did the same.”

The interview, which was conducted in writing, covered a variety of faith-related topics, including Trump’s own spiritual life (oh, c’mon! he doesn’t have one) and his plans for the White House office responsible for connecting with those of faith.

To begin with, the questions were negotiated with the White House press office. Then the questions were presented to the president by Paula White, who is head of the White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative. Of course, while White may be unaware of this, she’s also one of the evangelicals Trump was ridiculing.

MSN notes that Trump doesn’t consider himself an evangelical but he did praise his evangelical “advisers” for reopening churches despite the pandemic — which has now killed more than 231,000 Americans thanks to his inaction. They “are passionate about America’s traditional values and want our churches to be open,” he added.

“Thankfully, many great churches are now back open and meeting in person,” thus encouraging more people to be sickened by COVID-19.

What a guy.

This of course encouraged superspreader events, especially at the United House of Prayer For All People, in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is directly linked to 143 infections and five deaths. That church is now barred from holding public services for the next two weeks.

Trump credited his “faith” (I’m sorry but this man is not the least bit religious) with helping him to recover from COVID-19 after he likely contracted it at the White House Rose Garden in what’s now considered a superspreader event.

During his stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, Trump was bombarded with drugs that most of us could never afford: the ebola drug Remdesivir, the steroid dexamethasone, and Regeneron, an experimental antibody cocktail.

But rather than crediting the medical professionals who saved him, he said he and Melania (who was sickened to a lesser extent) “felt the prayers of Americans from all across the country — and even around the world” as he recovered, and added, “there were miracles coming down from heaven.”

Apparently, God didn’t have any miracles for the hundreds-of-thousands of Americans this virus has killed, but he had miracles for an angry, obese man who ridicules the evangelicals who unquestioningly support him. And feeling the heat from Joe Biden, who’s still comfortably ahead of him in the polls, Trump will have the opportunity to be an even bigger superspreader as he heads to rallies in three critical battleground states Saturday — North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

America, are we “winning” yet?
