‘It’s Crazy, Lunatic, Stuff:’ Trump’s Big Donors, Friends, and Staff Want Nothing to Do with His Fight

The Daily Beast brings us a story we all want to hear [1]. Donald Trump finds himself increasingly alone, abandoned, with no one to turn to. There is usually a 1:1 ratio between people with a lot of money and intelligence (there are, obviously, exceptions), and those big donors, upon which Trump relied so heavily throughout his initial run, throughout his presidency, and then into the 2020 election want absolutely nothing to do with the “fight” to “stop the steal.”

These people tend to discern that point at which you’re just throwing money away and there’s only a small group of people that will do that, Trump’s grassroots supporters! Now THEY are willing to fire this thing up and keep it going, to the tune of $10 million a day. We have no evidence of anything but we’re willing to bet that maybe 25% of that money actually goes to the fight to stop that damned steal! The rest goes to the important stuff, like paying Trump’s debts to whomever he’s paying that day.

But it’s not just money. The political people that know what they’re doing are leaving, too, perhaps you noticed? That press conference at the Four Seasons evidenced quite a bit.

From the Daily Beast [1]:

The breakdown, sources with direct knowledge say, has been evident for some time just below the surface. Staff in leadership roles on the 2020 reelection campaign have disappeared from public view. Others, including campaign manager Bill Stepien [2], have had limited to no involvement in the legal campaign to challenge the vote results in key states, and have privately said they want nothing to do with it. And committees ostensibly tasked with ginning up support for the president have stayed conspicuously on the sidelines.

Yeah, good smart people, even those without money (like writers) tend to know when it’s time to throw in the towel and go work at something that might actually succeed, like Georgia. But there’s trouble in Trump paradise because little family squabbles over millions of dollars and contesting presidential elections are spreading out into the general public, after all, you’re reading about it! And they’re talking about it:

“The president is entitled to whatever legal defense he wants to have. I don’t think it’s going anywhere. But he’s entitled to it, and I am not going to contribute any funds to that. I will in fact plead with him to concentrate on Georgia’s Senate races and I’ll contribute to that,” businessman Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar, a Trump and GOP mega-donor [3] who leads the Republican Hindu Coalition, said in an interview on Tuesday.

Two things. First, bwahahahahahahahahahahahah, catch our breath. They want Trump to concentrate on the Georgia Senate race? An election that doesn’t involve him and only flips the Senate? Why the hell would he care about that? It’s not like he became a Republican because he has a vision for the country in accord with conservative principles. His principles are set out in elegant offices just off the Volga River. His other “principle” is “him.”

Second: I wish “ill” upon everyone who begins a sentence with “he’s entitled to whatever legal defense,” “but he’s entitled to it.” No, he isn’t. This is not someone who got caught with dime bag. This hurts the country and it hurts democracy. And you know what? No, he’s not entitled to destroy democracy because he loves getting $10 million a day and keeping $7.5 million of it – great as that sounds. He is not entitled to take our stability as a democratic republic away and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

Kumar added, “I’m currently writing messages to Jared Kushner and the White House political apparatus there on this issue.” Though he said he firmly believes that the outgoing president “could come back with a vengeance in 2024” and “could get a landslide in 2024,” he called a recent press conference featuring Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani “a joke.”

Brilliant analysis. “Rudy’s a joke.” No shit?

He firmly believes Trump could come back with a vengeance in 2024? We’re not comfortable counting him out because we’ve been wrong every step of the way in predicting Trump’s possibilities (except Biden winning). But we feel compelled to ask, has this man seen Trump lately?

We all age, this isn’t some “joke” about Trump aging (in fact we hate “agism”), there are plenty of 79-year-olds that would be fantastic presidents. But nearly all of them are people that go out of their way to take care of themselves. Trump has gained significant weight while in office and he didn’t start out slim. He takes pride in eating Big Macs and Kentucky Fried Chicken. He is already having trouble moving around, something’s wrong with that right arm, something went wrong when they rushed him to a hospital last year, and he’s now a post-COVID patient. We don’t want to be a buzz-kill here but one has to be A) alive and B) sort of functioning, to win in a landslide.

Anyway. That’s the state of our states and the outgoing president’s fight to fight. It is getting increasingly pathetic by the day and each day he fights, we now know it’s about that $10 million a day. Given the choice, most of us would turn down the $7.5 million a day over dying of shame by tweeting out “I am not conceding, I WON!!” Even some writers.
