Congressman Mo Brooks represents Alabama’s 3rd Congressional district which includes much of Northern Alabama, which includes Huntsville and that’s a damn shame because if there’s any town in America that deserves a smart congressman it’s a smart town like Huntsville, and we mean that. Back in the day when just the NASA logo would stop people in their tracks, Hunstville was the place to be for … well, rocket scientists, and to a large extent still is, and thus this town of about 200,000, is a wonderful place where you can’t throw a dead frog and not hit someone with Ph.D. It is a monument to the power of both gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the red-rock solid southern country white man, that this smart town is represented by one of the dumbest members of Congress not named Gohmert or King. And that same Mo Brooks, representing such a wonderful place, is now bound and determined to strip America of its last shreds of democracy.

According to The Hill, it doesn’t matter that all the elections are certified by Republicans, Republican courts, Republican Bill Barr, none of that matters. He knows who won the election, the guy he likes:

Republican Rep. Mo Brooks (Ala.) on Wednesday told reporters that he plans to challenge the Electoral College votes when Congress meets to certify the election for President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 6.

“In my judgment, if only lawful votes by eligible American citizens were cast, Donald Trump won the Electoral College by a significant margin, and Congress’s certification should reflect that,” Brooks told Politico. “This election was stolen by the socialists engaging in extraordinary voter fraud and election theft measures.”

In my opinion, (opinions seem to matter more than facts) Mo Brooks may have a little bit of a legal conundrum that might not be thought through very well. Because if he’s planning on saying the entire election was stolen, how can he be sure that he is the one who will be in Congress on January 6th? He was on the ballot, too. We’re pretty certain he’s just saying it was “stolen” in places Trump was supposed to win, and not down south in nice Huntsville where there’s no doubt, ever, who won. It was the guy they picked before the election.

But this isn’t the senate and as powerful as Mo Brooks might be as the mighty congressman from Alabama’s Third District, it would seem to be a difficult thing to do for a long congressman. Fact is, he’s just one other guy under Nancy’s gavel. So we’re not quite sure what he’s talking about but that’s okay because it sounds a lot like Mo Brooks doesn’t know what he’s talking about:

Brooks reportedly added that he has had “indirect communication” with some senators about potentially joining forces, though he declined to provide further details. The lawmaker, also a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus, told Politico that he has discussed the procedural maneuver with some members of GOP leadership, but they did not give him a “thumbs-up” or a “thumbs-down.” 

We have said before that all this would be funny except that anywhere from 10-20% of America believes that Mo Brooks isn’t doing enough and cannot figure out why Trump isn’t already imposing martial law. Those same 10-20% are damned dangerous. They are already keeping McConnell, Graham, McCarthy, Cornyn, Cruz, Rubio, none of those guys can take a stand like the governors of the states, people who govern outside of DC, and just say “Shut up!”

And so it spirals down, increasing hatred, increasing distrust. This election wasn’t even that close!! And yet we’re closer to Civil War after the election than before, precisely because these people are too autocratic in their veins. They had their autocrat and they’ll be damned if they’re giving him up to something as mealy-mouthed as an election!

Mo Brooks is just the first. Maybe he’ll be told – behind the scenes – to stand down. Maybe not. It gets more dangerous each day. Meanwhile, Trump’s made $170 million (probably $19o million by today, given the rate they’re giving) and stands to only make more money the louder he yells.

Joe Biden has a near impossible task and he might literally be one of the only people in America who could pull it off.
