Jim Comey Argues Trump Shouldn’t Be Prosecuted by Biden’s New AG After Leaving the Oval Office

Former FBI Director James Comey has some words of advice for President-elect Joe Biden about what his new attorney general should do: Focus on “fostering the trust of the American people” and don’t pursue criminal investigations into Donald Trump.

I’m going to say that’s a solid NOPE. By all means, focus on Trump’s dirty dealings. Maybe I’m only on the outskirts of this thing but Trump’s shady tax shenanigans, his fostering of Russia, and his inept and uncaring [1] handling of a pandemic that’s resulted in nearly 360,000 deaths in the U.S. mean criminal investigations should very definitely go forward.

He’s continually incited violence and now his supporters have stormed the Capitol building and shut down Congress. If that’s not worthy of prosecution then I don’t know what is.

But Comey, in his book, excerpted by The Guardian, writes that despite whatever evidence there might be, the incoming Attorney General should not “pursue a criminal investigation of Donald Trump,” Newsweek [1] reports.

In an excerpt from his book Saving Justice: Truth, Transparency, and Trust per The Guardian, Comey writes:

“Although these cases might be righteous in a vacuum, the mission of the next attorney general must be fostering the trust of the American people.”

Newsweek contacted the publishers of Comey’s book, scheduled to be published next week, seeking additional context for his reported remarks.

Trump fired Comey in 2017, At that time Comey was leading an investigation into whether Trump’s advisers had colluded with Russia to alter the results of the 2016 election. Trump has repeatedly denied this was the reason for Comey’s firing. He has, however, described Comey as “the worst FBI Director in history.” He’s even suggested he should have somehow fired Comey before [2] assuming office.

Your guess is as good as mine as to how Trump could have accomplished this feat since he was still a private citizen at the time. That alone should have given people a good idea as to just how ignorant this man is.

And Comey understandably has no love for Trump either, and he’s criticized the president numerous times. In his book, he describes Trump as “unethical and untethered to truth (that’s putting it mildly) and institutional values. His leadership is transactional, ego-driven, and about personal loyalty.”

Biden hasn’t announced his AG nominee as yet but whoever is confirmed is going to have a very full plate because there’s a boatload politically-charged investigations. But the real challenge is going to be keeping these investigations separate from any political interference. Or even any possible concept of interference. It’s going to be a tough job and whoever Biden chooses for this, that person already has my admiration.

Really. Because every decision that person makes will have some political weight attached to it. But we’re fortunate that this person will be dealing with an equally divided Congress and Senate. There’s some positive change for you.

Biden has addressed this issue in earlier interviews and has told CNN:

“It’s not my Justice Department, it’s the people’s Justice Department,” he said. “I am not going to be telling them what they have to do and don’t have to do. I am not going to be saying, ‘go prosecute, A, B, or C.”

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is echoing this and both say they will “not tell the Justice Department how to do its job.”

I’m hoping Biden will restore calm especially in light of the protests that exploded in Washington, D.C. but I’m hoping any new attorney general will shine a bright light on Trump and further expose his ugliness. If this country is ever to heal, this is what needs to happen.
