First Lady Melania Trump is facing scrutiny after being caught borrowing part of her own speech at the Republican National Convention and using it again in a statement about the Capitol Hill riot that was spurred by President Donald Trump, Raw Story [1] reports.
She issued the statement in a release on the White House website and complained about being criticized after the outcome of what was almost certainly a failed coup.
“I am disappointed and disheartened with what happened last week,” she said. “I find it shameful that surrounding these tragic events there has been salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false, misleading accusations on me — from people who are looking to be relevant and have an agenda.”
CNN correspondent Kate Bennett couldn’t help but notice Melania Trump was plagiarizing part of her own 2020 RNC speech — specifically this part:
“The common thread in all of these challenging situations is America’s unwavering resolve to help one another,” she is said, according to both transcripts.
New: It appears @FLOTUS [2] has copied parts of her statement today from … herself. Significant similarities between statement today and her RNC speech from August: pic.twitter.com/S2V8YHIcuZ [3]

Of course, accusations of plagiarism [5] dogged her in 2016 when she was accused of co-opting parts of her 2016 RNC Convention speech from former First Lady Michelle Obama. And she faced further accusations of plagiarism in 2018 after a booklet she released was found to be strikingly similar to one published earlier by the Obama administration, BBC News [6] reports.
The booklet, which was about online safety for kids, was distributed as part of her “Be Best” campaign and the text and graphics of the booklet were almost the same as the text appearing in the earlier edition. At the time the White House tried to excuse this by saying she was trying to use her position to “amplify” the text’s constructive message.
The text that appeared originally on the initiative’s website reported the booklet was “by First Lady Melania Trump and the Federal Trade Commission.”
But then the similarities between it and the Obama-era edition were discovered and the text was subsequently revised to describe it as “a Federal Trade Commission booklet, promoted by First Lady Melania Trump.”
Then the White House went on the offensive, releasing a statement alleging that “opposition” media of turning “a day meant to promote kindness and positive efforts on behalf of children, to instead lob baseless accusations towards the First Lady and her new initiatives.”
The irony here is that the First Lady’s booklet was targeting cyber-bullying when her husband is one of the biggest cyber-bullies around. At least until he was removed from Twitter and scores of other platforms anyway.
Just think of what we’ll all be missing when these two leave: One person who apparently doesn’t have any original thoughts of her own and her husband who unfortunately can’t keep his thoughts to himself.
Twitter had some thoughts as well:
Hey Melania @MELANIATRUMP [7]
YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM.
You have blood on your hands Ms Birther.#BeBest [8]

Melania finally had something to say. Honor the dead terrorists before the officers and then me me me me me me me. She and Trump certainly belong together.

What a pathetic joke. You’re not a victim @FLOTUS [2]! People died you self centered grifter. These people can’t be out of our house soon enough.
Melania Trump mourns lost lives but doesn't blame the President for Capitol riothttps://t.co/2okWIGr8zp [11]

This isn’t satire — Melania was overseeing a photo shoot at the White House during the Trump riot https://t.co/sPRo1GwFgc [13] https://t.co/boblPkqnSR [14]

Melania Trump says her heart goes out to the people who died attempting to overthrow the government. She also wants you to focus on the real victim here: her, for the press reporting she was too busy doing a photo shoot to say anything about the attack. https://t.co/SZI4iAzJZF [16]

Melania’s statement today about the Capitol riot her husband fomented is sickening. Let me remind you, her only interest is always about how she can grift. Just like her husband. And always about the photos. https://t.co/uibbeDzwBA [18]
