Republicans know that the independent voters who might consider voting for either party, the ones that voted for Trump the first time, but then ran for the exits in 2020, are watching the Republican party closer than ever right now. The last thing that GOP leaders want is for Trump to barge into CPAC to read out his long list of grievances, attacking the Republicans around him that he perceives as failures, simply because they couldn’t steal an election for him. It is becoming increasingly evident that Trump expected such.
Someway, somehow, they were supposed to find a way to get Trump his victory, voters be damned; “Guys, guys, we just need to find 11,711 more votes, that’s all.” And now Trump has the opportunity to go right into the belly of the beast, in front of a crowd that loves him, and GOPers worry that Trump will spend far more time blasting Republicans than Democrats.
From the Washington Post:
“By all accounts, Trump remains furious at a few he believes betrayed him from within during his attempt to overturn the election results — Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) all come up frequently, sometimes multiple times a day, according to people who speak to him.
“That desire for revenge worries GOP officials. On Friday, the former president made his first endorsement against an incumbent House Republican, backing a former White House aide, Max Miller, against Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), a former NFL wide receiver.”
He is coming with an agenda and though there will be attacks on Biden, those won’t hurt the GOP, the above might and Trump might be angrier at the GOP “disloyal” than the Democrats.
And that’s nothing like Kevin McCarthy might get for tolerating Liz Cheney:
The former president has also turned on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and reportedly may even attack him directly in his speech to CPAC on Sunday — his first public address since leaving office.
From a pure entertainment perspective alone, Trump’s CPAC speech is must-watch television. We suspect that Trump plans on laying out the direction he wants to take for the next few years. This will include naming the people that must be removed from “his” party.
