Ex-LAPD Detective Accused of Hurling Racial Slurs: ‘Go Back to Your Little Cage You Little Monkey’ (VIDEO)

A shocking video that shows a retired detective with the Los Angeles Police Department using racist language to intimidate a Black man whose car was apparently involved in an accident in Santa Clarita, California is going viral. That video has gone viral on Twitter where it has been viewed more than 1.3 million times.

That video, posted by @What’sUp SCV shows former LAPD Central Bureau Detective John Motto telling the young Black man, “Oh but you can say n*gger and I can’t?” A woman is seen pulling Motto back and ordering the young man to go back to their car, L.A. Taco [1] reports.

“Are you f*cking serious right now,” the young man says and begins pacing. Right after that Motto loudly states “Go back into your little cage until the monkey controller gets here.”

Seconds later, Motto approaches the man again, saying “Are you going to take your ID out, yes or no? Are you going to take your identification out?” When the young man turns to a group of bystanders and asks if they heard Motto call him the n-word, Motto jumps in with “No, he started the n*gger thing because he is the dumb n*gger.”

LAPD Officer Drake Madison with the LAPD Media Relations Division reported that Motto retired in May 2020. He was a detective assigned to Operations Central Bureau . “As a former employee, he is no longer subject to disciplinary action by the department,” Madison told L.A. Taco, noting “the LAPD has no disciplinary authority over his conduct.”

The news site also interviewed Uriel Barraza, who recorded the now-viral video of Motto engaging in the racist confrontation. Barraza said he was on his lunch break when he saw a Scion Coupe trying to pull over after apparently getting into an accident. He then saw Motto pull in behind the Scion in a black pickup truck and begin honking.

“[Motto] pulled up next to him, screamed at him then pulled up forward, parked in front of him, got out of the [truck] and just started going off on him,” Barraza said.

It’s not clear if Motto was involved in the accident or if he was merely a witness, but Barraza noted “I didn’t see anything on the truck.”

He also noted that at least two Los Angeles County Sheriffs vehicles responded and the Sheriff’s Department has issued a statement to L.A. Taco on Tuesday noting:

“Today, we became aware of the social media post and the racist language which was used following the collision. We have taken a report documenting the incident. This is an ongoing investigation and we cannot provide further details at this time.”

The LAPD also issued a statement Tuesday, and while it didn’t mention Motto by name, the department acknowledges it has opened an internal investigation “to ensure there is no current Department nexus to this incident,” and adding “What is seen in the video is not reflective of the thousands of hard-working men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department.”

The Department has also confirmed that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office plans to review 370 cases that Motto has presided over.
