Melania Was Reportedly Angry About the White House Easter Bunny’s Outfit Because It Didn’t Match Her Aesthetic

During her four years as First Lady, Melania Trump earned a reputation for having a rather chilly, reserved demeanor. But as we’ve seen, she does sometimes make her feelings known, as she did when she abruptly left her husband, former President Donald Trump standing on the tarmac, and stalked past reporters as the former first couple was heading home to Mar-a-Lago.

She also earned a reputation for her rather odd taste in home furnishings, including her garish Christmas displays, and “renovated” the White House Rose Garden, removing a beloved part of White House history in doing so. Melania’s taste in such things is apparently very exacting, even when it comes to something as innocuous as the White House Easter Bunny, Washingtonian reports. Something that one would think is fairly uncontroversial.

However, Melania apparently took exception at the Easter Bunny’s blue vest during the annual Easter Egg roll in 2017 and snapped rather abruptly at staffers, noted former White House communications staffer Cliff Sims wrote in his blockbuster memoir Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House. This was her first Easter in the White House and she was scheduled to appear alongside her husband and their son Barron Trump to receive guests. Staff rushed to disrobe the rabbit at her command.

Sims writes:

“On the day of the event, everything was in place — the staging, the decorations, the 18,000 colored Easter eggs, the band. Stephanie Grisham, her Communications Director, had mapped out all of the camera angles and movements. Mrs. Trump was wearing an elegant light pink silk dress. She looked at ease, as if the whole thing had come together without much effort. She and Barron were preparing to accompany the President out onto the balcony with a junior staffer dressed in an Easter Bunny costume when Melania froze. Her lips formed into a judgmental frown.”

“That needs to be taken off,” she said.

“She wasn’t talking to Barron or her husband, but the Easter Bunny. He was wearing a light blue vest, and for whatever reason the color or the fabric intruded on the First Lady’s milieu. With seconds to go, staffers jumped into action, scrambling to undress the white bunny in full view of a slightly perplexed President.”

Washingtonian wasn’t able to verify Sims’ claims, but photos do show Melania standing next to the giant rabbit, which was in fact, vest-free.

Now fast-forward to this year’s White House Easter celebration and there’s no such quibbling. This year’s Easter egg roll was canceled, as was last year’s, thanks to the pandemic. But in lieu of that, there was two — count ’em, two Easter bunnies, Insider notes. Each was dressed differently, with one wearing a dress and the other a vest (no it wasn’t blue). There was one major difference though — both rabbits were wearing masks.

First Lady Jill Biden appears to be drama-free and likes to keep things simple. A refreshing change from her predecessor.
