Biden Moves Fast to Block Trump’s Late Move and Fires Four Trump Appointees: ‘Effective 6:00 p.m. Tonight …’

President Biden isn’t putting up with Trump’s decision to slide his people into choice positions just as he was on his way out the door. In late December of 2020, Donald Trump inserted three supporters into jobs in a little-known committee that might impact that area around Trump’s hotel. The three joined another Trump appointee from 2018, to give the committee a four to three majority that could block any Biden plans. One might be very cynical and think Trump wanted to control the area around his hotel but we cannot know with certainty.

We are certain that they’re gone.

President Biden sent out letters to the four appointees to the Commission on Fine Arts, which oversees the design of federal buildings. CNN obtained the letter sending all four out the door:

Justin Shubow, who was appointed in 2018 and later elected chairman, received a letter from the White House on Monday requesting he resign from the commission — or be terminated that evening.

“Should we not receive your resignation, your position with the Commission will be terminated effective 6:00 pm tonight,” according to the letter reviewed by CNN.

Well, there is no ambiguity there. Jen Psaki was asked about the move and answered:

“I, unfortunately, don’t have all the details on this. The little piece I recall is that a number of them were nominated just recently in January of 2021, so before President Trump left office. And certainly, any President coming in has the right to nominate their own people to serve on a commission or serve in any positions in their own administration.”

There is some ambiguity as to who was appointed when but Mediate has the most recent and probably accurate information:

Trump appointed four members to the commission on December 22, 2020, less than a month before leaving office and weeks before the Capitol insurrection. Three of them — Chas FaganPerry Guillot, and Steven Spandle — were fired yesterday, while three of Trump’s appointees — Rodney Mims Cook, Jr.James C. McCrery, II, and Duncan G. Stroik — remain.

The new members are:

  • Peter Cook, Principal, HGA Architects
  • Hazel Ruth Edwards, Professor and Chair, Howard University Department of Architecture in the College of Engineering and Architecture
  • Justin Garrett Moore, Inaugural Program Officer, Humanities in Place, Andrew Mellon Foundation
  • Billie Tsien, Partner, Todd Williams Billie Tsien Architects

So that is that, as Psaki said, Biden wants his people in those positions. We suspect that there was some nefarious reason that Trump inserted his people so late. Biden isn’t putting up with the move. “By 6:00 p.m. tonight.”
