FINALLY: CNN Fires Rick Santorum for Being Rick Santorum and the Internet is Rejoicing

We suppose the MAGAs will chalk this up to “cancel culture,” ironic from the very same people who canceled Liz Cheney from the job she’d earned with the GOP. But, yes, CNN finally fired Rick Santorum for the racist, entirely untrue, and “American Exceptionalism in spite of all” statements he made weeks ago against Native Americans. Santorum said that this land we call “America” had no real culture until white settlers arrived and established “American culture.” A more objective person might say that we’ve robbed Native Americans of real culture and replaced it with strip malls with Best Buy, Petco, Old Navy, and the other stores that go right beside them, almost as if by law.

Right now, it is hard to tell which is the bigger scandal, Santorum’s remarks, or the amount of time it took CNN to come to its senses and get it done. Santorum has long been rumored to be the biggest dick in Washington DC and has done more than enough to get his contract canceled and yet even this time it looked like CNN was once again going to ignore it.

We know that the Right-Wing argues that opposing opinions are “canceled out” on the left (See Liz Cheney, though), and yet Santorum’s statement was not an “opinion” so much as an assertion that the many Native American cultures didn’t matter because the United States overwhelmed them:

“We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here,” Santorum told students during remarks at a Young America’s Foundation event. “I mean, yes, we have Native Americans, but candidly, there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

Candidly, to the extent there isn’t enough Native American culture present today, it might have something to do with small pox blankets, reservations granted on the worst land available (and then usually taken away anyway, see Oklahoma), along with broken promise after broken promise. And besides, even though Santorum is Catholic, he’s still WASPY enough to never really look for any culture beyond his own.

From HuffingtonPost:

But on Saturday, a CNN senior executive told HuffPost that the network quietly ended its contract with Santorum this week. This executive, who requested anonymity to speak openly, said the decision to cut ties with Santorum came after he went on one of the network’s shows, “Cuomo Prime Time,” to explain himself shortly after he made his racist comments. He blew it, said this executive, and after that, nobody at the network wanted to keep him around.

“Leadership wasn’t particularly satisfied with that appearance. None of the anchors wanted to book him,” said the executive. “So he was essentially benched anyway.”

It was much worse – appropriately so – from Native American advocacy groups:

“Rick Santorum is an unhinged and embarrassing racist who disgraces CNN and any other media company that provides him a platform,” NCAI president Fawn Sharp said in a fiery statement last month that went viral. “Televising someone with his views on Native American genocide is fundamentally no different than putting an outright Nazi on television to justify the Holocaust. Any mainstream media organization should fire him or face a boycott from more than 500 tribal nations and our allies from across the country and worldwide.”

True.

And that was the entire reason that Savage made that brilliant move. It is disgusting and so is he.
