Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) is known for stretching the truth — describing [1] the rioters who invaded the Capitol as “political prisoners” is one such instance. But every now and then he tells the truth. Which he did in a speech before Congress Thursday where he talked about his college SAT score, Business Insider [2] reports.
“I did very well,” he said. “I’m sure that shocks people that think I’m the dumbest guy in Congress.”
Well yeah, many of us do think that, but he has close competition from Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.)
Gohmert took to the House floor to claim that Americans scored higher on college entrance tests BEFORE the Department of Education was created — and as you might expect, there’s no evidence for that but this is Gohmert, after all.
And that’s when he claimed did well on his SATS.
“When I took it, I did very well, got me into the Honors program at A&M (Texas A&M University),” he said.
But Gohmert is not well-acquainted with logic and when he complained about the rioters being “political prisoners,” he did this as a way to attack President Joe Biden.
“Joe Biden’s Justice Department is criminalizing political protest, but only political protest by Republicans or conservatives,” he said at the time. “They’re destroying the lives of American families, they’re weaponizing the events of January 6 to silence Trump-supporting Americans.”
No Louie, you’re thinking of Trump here. You know, the guy who sent in [3] the National Guard to “silence” peaceful protesters in cities across the U.S. who were protesting in support of Black Lives Matter.
While Gohmert is arguably not the brightest crayon in the box, neither are Marjorie Taylor Greene, or Lauren Boebert. Greene likes to do things like complain [4] that members of Guam’s National Guard “ambushed” her office, by um, bringing cookies. And then, of course, there were her weird comments about Jewish space lasers, which you can read about here. [5]
Then there’s Boebert, who posts completely stupid tweets like this:

Gaetz is also in competition with Gohmert for becoming mired [8] in a huge controversy surrounding allegations that he had an intimate relationship with an underaged girl. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, [9] but jeez, you’d think people high up on the political totem pole would have enough brains to figure out this could grow into a great big national scandal. But nope, that rarely happens.
So yeah, it’s possible Gohmert isn’t the dumbest person in Congress. Seems as though he has plenty of company.
