Rep. Madison Cawthorn Said He Missed 15 House Votes Because He Was Fulfilling His ‘Service as a Husband’

In 2020, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) said that Democrats who didn’t show up for work were “cowards.” That’s an interesting sentiment since he now claims he has missed more votes than any other freshman member of Congress because he went on honeymoon with his wife while the votes were being held, according to The American Independent. [1]

By that reckoning does that make him a coward too?

A report by Axios [2] shows that Cawthorn has missed 16.2 percent of the votes during Congress’s current session. That’s three percentage points more than the next freshman GOP member, Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.)

Cawthorn has missed more than five times the number of votes as New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman, the highest-listed Democrat. He has missed 2.82 percent of votes.

Of course, Cawthorn, a firm supporter of former President Donald Trump, might be a misogynist in the making, if he’s not one already. Earlier this year he was hit a spate of sexual harassment allegations [3] and charges that he falsified his biography. Kind of like his idol, no?

And in an interview with the conservative network Real America’s Voice, he claimed the reason he’s missed so many votes is due to his “service as a husband.”

“I just got married about seven weeks ago and so my wife and I, we went on our honeymoon, but during that time, I missed 15 votes in one week because that’s when they had the votes pile up,” Cawthorn said.

Then he added that missing the legislative sessions wasn’t a big deal because “every single vote that came up” “was Democrat garbage, so I was happy to be able to not actually vote on them.”

Spoken like a true Trump supporter.

He also added another cutesy barb:

“And I’ll tell you, if I had to choose between voting with Nancy Pelosi or spending time with my beautiful wife, I’ll choose Christine every time.”

But here’s the thing: Madison had several opportunities to vacation without missing votes, “Democrat garbage” or otherwise. The official congressional calendar shows [4] Congress was not in session for the week of April 4-9. Cawthorn went on his honeymoon from April 13-16. The House will also not be in session for the first week of June, the first week of July, and the entire month of August. So Cawthorn had ample opportunities to not miss votes.

That’s not even half of it, however. In February, Cawthorn filed a letter [5] with the House clerk claiming he couldn’t attend one session because of the pandemic and said he’d allow another Republican to vote on his behalf. Then he attended the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida, where he gave a speech attacking Democrats. I guess they don’t get coronavirus there.

Now here’s the funny part: Apparently, Cawthorn has a short memory, because as recently as July 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Cawthorn scolded Democrats in a tweet:

“Leaders show up no matter how uncertain the times are. The Democrats are cowards for hiding and not showing up to work. I guess we can label them as ‘Nonessential personnel.'”

Astute Twitter users had some thoughts on that tweet.
