Trump Can’t Get a Book Deal Because He Lies So Much That it Would Be a ‘Fact-Checking Nightmare’

Former President Donald Trump is bragging that he has received offers from two of the most “prestigious publishing houses.” However, none of the five major publishing houses say they have extended offers to him, Politico [1] reports.

Indeed, even though a memoir by the ex-president would assuredly be a best-seller, publishing houses say they won’t touch him with the proverbial 10-foot pole. Their hesitance is driven by a number of factors, but underneath all of that is the worry that whatever Trump writes won’t be truthful.

“It would be too hard to get a book that is factually accurate, actually,” said one key figure in the world of book publishing, explaining why publishers are reluctant to publish anything by Trump. “That would be the problem. If he can’t even admit that he lost the election, then how do you publish that?”

And this is a pretty rare situation — book publishers usually scoop up books by former presidents, knowing full well that the books will be enormously popular. Books by former President Barack Obama have sold well into [2] the millions, as have books [3] by former First Lady Michelle Obama. But while Trump’s voice may be silent in the publishing world, several of his former aides are stepping up to fill the void. This includes former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been offered a seven-figure deal for two books by Simon & Schuster. That deal sparked criticism and claims [4] from respected authors and employees that the publishing house was promoting “bigotry,” and a petition [5] is now circulating. Pence has openly discriminated [6] against the LGBTQ+ community and the petition seeks to “Cancel the two-book deal with Mike Pence and do not sign any more book deals with former members of the Trump administration” among other things.

Unsurprisingly, there are reports that Trump is in a snit over Pence’s book deal. But Trump spokesperson Jason Miller is insisting Trump is “fine with it” and has “no issues” with it.

Yeah, I bet.

And of course, Trump hasn’t said who these two mysterious publishers are, except to say the offers are “from the most unlikely of publishers.” Whom he turned down because “he did not want to do such a deal right now.”

He couldn’t resist crowing about the situation in a statement to Politico Monday afternoon. Because of course he did and bragged that “two of the biggest and most prestigious publishing houses have made very substantial offers which I have rejected.”

“That doesn’t mean I won’t accept them sometime in the future, as I have started writing the book,” he wrote. “If my book will be the biggest of them all, and with 39 books written or being written about me, does anybody really believe that they are above making a lot of money. Some of the biggest sleezebags [sic] on earth run these companies.”

“No morals, no nothing, just the bottom line,” he added. “And they sure wouldn’t admit it before the fact. But after the fact, they will stand by and say, ‘Let’s go.'”

Well, all I can say at this point is it takes one sleazebag to know one. And Politico reached out to the editors and publishers of the “Big Five+ publishing houses — Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan Publishers, and, of course, Simon & Schuster — to see if anyone had heard anything about Trump’s purported book deal offers. Most flatly said they won’t touch a Trump project if he does start shopping any book around.

“It doesn’t matter what the upside of on a Trump book deal is, the headaches the project would bring would far outweigh the potential in the eyes of a major publisher,” said Keith Urbahn, the president and founding partner of Javelin, a literary and creative agency (per Politico). “Any editor bold enough to acquire the Trump memoir is looking at a fact-checking nightmare, an exodus of other authors and a staff uprising in the unlikely event they strike a deal with the former President.”

So there you have it, folks. Trump has turned toxic here and it doesn’t seem likely another Trump book is in the works. Not for the foreseeable future anyway.
