Throughout his presidency, Donald Trump tried — and failed to pass an infrastructure bill, so much so that it became a joke — of sorts around Capitol Hill. Now he’s trying to make sure his successor, President Joe Biden won’t be able to pass one as well, Politico notes.
Trump has had plenty to say this past week about the situation as negotiations between Senate Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill and the White House. He’s exhorted GOP lawmakers to abandon the discussions and attacked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for even encouraging the discussions.
Apparently, Trump has been irritating enough that some Senate Republicans have revealed in interviews that they have told the former president to let up on the criticism and actually support the infrastructure deal.
Even typical Trump brown-noser Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) isn’t listening to his former boss and is all for Biden’s infrastructure plan.
“The last time I told him there’s not going to be any tax increases, and I’m of the opinion let’s do a deal that’s good for the roads, ports, and bridges. Let’s do it,” Graham said. “I appreciate the effort of everyone and I’m hoping we get there.”
Politico notes that even as Trump continues to try to undermine negotiations, his attempts at derailing the infrastructure plan have made little if any waves on the Hill.
“I’ve read the statements,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). “But it’s a little short on specificity.”
And on Wednesday Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said both parties had arrived on an agreement regarding the “major issues” of the infrastructure deal and a cloture vote was expected in the evening. McConnell has said he plans to advance the infrastructure deal.
It’s a safe bet that Trump is stewing in his own juice over this and it’s nice that some Republicans have finally discovered their backbone.
“I don’t think there’s a lot there,” one senior GOP aide said, referring to Trump’s attempts to scupper the deal. “It’s not reverberating here. I don’t think Rob Portman sees this and goes, ‘Oh no, I have to give up.”
Trump’s threats to lawmakers for giving Democrats “a big and beautiful win on Infrastructure” border on the ridiculous, especially in this recent statement he issued:
“Republican voters will never forget their name, nor will the people of our Country,” he wrote.
Trump has reached a new level of pathetic behavior. This country’s infrastructure is in dire shape and threatening to upend a measure meant to improve this situation is pretty sad. But it’s not something Trump is going to care about as long as he continues to believe he’s been wronged. And he’s still very evidently full of bile over Biden winning the election.
