If there’s one thing that’s certain, former President Donald Trump drove some foreign leaders nuts — especially German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the two world leaders clashed over NATO, Vogue reports, and had tense phone calls, including one in which Trump called Merkel, who is a quantum chemist, “stupid.” As if that weren’t enough, Trump also disagreed with Germany’s liberal immigration policy while Merkel disagreed with his ban on Muslims.

Merkel has also sharply criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic, noting in July of last year:

“As we are experiencing first hand, you cannot fight the pandemic with lies and disinformation than you can fight it with hate or incitement to hatred,” she said at the time, and her comments were widely viewed as rebuking Trump. “The limits of populism and denial of basic truths are being laid bare.”

Indeed.

Trump has also had less than pleasant run-ins with French President Emanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

And there’s a reason why I’m bringing all of this up: According to author Michael Wolff, in the days after Trump lost the election, folks in the White House only wanted to bring him good news. So they told him they had received news through back channels that Merkel, Macron, and Boris Johnson supported his denial that he lost the election.

“That was made up?” Spiegel International’s Marc Pitzke asked Wolff.

“Totally made up. But he still believes it. I brought Merkel up with him at Mar-a-Lago because I was expecting him to say terrible things about her,” Wolff responded. “I thought oh, that’ll play good in the German market. But then suddenly he’s saying, ‘no, no, no: Angela, she’s a really big fan.”

Wolff, 67, has written for a number of publications, including USA Today and The Hollywood Reporter and he’s written three books on the Trump Whitehouse, including Fire and Fury (2018), Siege: Trump Under Fire (2019), and Landslide: The Final Days of The Trump Presidency (to be published on July 27.)

So in other words, Wolff knows a thing or two about Trump and he told Pitzke there was no one in his political circle — his family, his campaign team, nor his cronies in the White House who believed he could in any way disrupt the election results.

“No one believed it. No one, 100 percent no one believed that Joe Biden was not going to be the president on Jan. 20,” Wolff said.

“So Jan. 6 was not an attempted coup?” Pitzke asked.

“That’s just political reporters trying to apply some logic to this,” Wolff responded. “There is no logic to this. There was no plan. He is deranged. The guy can’t get from the beginning of a sentence to the end of a sentence. Everybody knows there was no election fraud except Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani. It’s like they’re on some other planet.”

Too bad we can’t send Trump and Giuliani to join billionaires Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos in space. And then leave all of them up there.
