As we reported over the weekend, any time one talks about Trump and any kind of investigation or lawsuit, it is necessary to repeat over and over that Trump cannot survive anything without secrecy. As but one example, it is why he instructed everyone in the White House to not testify during his first impeachment and handed over very little in his first impeachment non-trial.
Now we have Trump grasping for secrecy regarding January 6th, which is so very odd for something that we were assured was nothing more than a protest that got out of hand. What could be secret about that?
And yet it damn well is something that Team Trump wants kept secret (and we all know why), to the point that Steve Bannon is talking about refusing to honor his subpoena.
Based upon what? Executive privilege? Bannon wasn’t even a government employee at the time!
Democratic Rep. Raskin has had it with these continued attempts at secrecy and sent out a warning shot over Bannon’s bow:
Raskin stated the obvious on MSNBC this morning:
He wasn’t working for the executive branch,” Raskin observed. “So even if you assume hypothetically that Donald Trump has some kind of executive privilege, which is extremely dubious in itself, how could that extend to Steve Bannon? So he’s completely exposed.”
And then Raskin lowered the hammer by reminding Bannon of the precedent:
“Remember, Susan McDougal spent 18 months in jail because she refused to participate in the Whitewater investigation when she was under subpoena. Does the law only apply against Democrats? I don’t think so.”
We don’t believe so, either. But we’re betting that Republicans do. Every person subpoenaed by the committee, Mark Meadows, Bannon, Scavino, and Patel have four more days to comply.
