Republicans Tell Royal Family to Strip Meghan Markle of Her Royal Title for Interfering in US Politics
Recently, Meghan Markle wrote an open letter to Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), which supported passing legislation that would give more paid leave time for parents.
Well, this infuriated Jason Smith, a Republican congressman from Missouri, who responded viciously. He not only mocked personal details of Markle’s childhood that she included in her letter, but he also encouraged the U.K. royal family to strip both Meghan and Harry of their titles.
In her letter, Markle says that, “No family should have to choose between earning a living and having the freedom to take care of their child (or a loved one, or themselves, as we would see with a comprehensive paid leave plan).” She uses the example of her own childhood, explaining how hard her mother worked to earn even simple pleasures, like a $4.99 salad bar.
The letter advocates for a cause that Meghan feels personally affected by, and she wrote it not just as a public figure, but also as an individual and concerned citizen. As someone with a platform, she is trying to affect positive change. The true reason that this frustrates Smith to the point of retaliation is that her views disagree with his own.
Meghan has two children of her own. As she said herself, she wrote the letter as “an engaged citizen and a parent.” Whether Jason Smith likes it or not, Meghan is a U.S. citizen, and her children are as well. Her affiliation with the British royal family in no way prohibits her from participating in American democracy.

Smith has gone further than just insulting Meghan. Last year, he wrote a letter to the British ambassador for the United States, accusing her and her husband of abusing their titles to influence politics in the United States. Again, however, he seems to forget that Meghan is in fact a citizen here, and currently resides in California.
Meghan Markle may have forsaken the British Royal Family, but that did not stop her from using their name to attempt to influence American politics. The British Royal Family must remove all titles of nobility from Harry and Meghan at once. https://t.co/onRe2UNM5w

Another Republican, Lisa McClain, (R-MI), said Markle was “incredibly out of touch” with Americans and that she should “stick to acting instead of trying to play politics”.
“The last thing we need right now is wealthy celebrities pushing their liberal agendas on the American people,” she added.
Many on Twitter were quick to call Smith out:
Poor Jason, you really hate seeing a woman of color stand up for women don't you. It's not the titles that bother you, it's Meghan's skin color. I find it funny how the GQP tells people they want smaller govt but you are trying to tell a figurehead in another country what to do. https://t.co/xNP5CGeSIt pic.twitter.com/4Nx8P1SLwP

What an inept waste of taxpayer money, instead of speaking to tabloids, why not work for your constituents. How many Missourians have had to choose between employment & their families? Just admit it. You are anti-American family. Anti-Parent. Anti-children. https://t.co/vB428YFEk5

How did you get elected to office? By appealing to people who are more stupid than you are? You can't even research the UK laws with an 8 year old's intelligence. https://t.co/sLuyhsN1VM

Thanks Jason. This is easily the most critical issue facing America.
Unlike the Insurrection & voting to let Bannon defy our government, this has the potential to derail democracy.
Thanks for standing strong! It is comforting to know such capable people are pretending to govern.— DH (@RealMegavisor) October 22, 2021
She is an American citizen, she's using her first ammendment rights – you can't take that away from her.

You forget that she was an AMERICAN CITIZEN before joining the royal family. She has every right to ask something to be done by the government, especially Paid Family Leave. Just say you're against paying your citizens for leave without using her as your cover.
