Lauren Boebert Compares Her Serving in Congress to Troops Fighting in the Military, ‘I Keep You Free!’

Consider Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert. She may well be the most annoying Republican in Congress and she seems to be competing with fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (Georgia) for the member of Congress with the lowest double-digit IQ. But another thing about Boebert is that she can’t seem to stand being out of the limelight, so she used Veteran’s Day to get attention and be inadvertently stupid at the same time. (I mean, c’mon, no one is ever stupid on purpose after all.)

But Newsweek reports that Boebert, in the midst of delivering a Veteran’s Day speech suggested serving in Congress is comparable to serving in the U.S. military. She was talking to a group of veterans in her state, who likely had all sorts of opinions on this, many of them not complimentary.

At any rate, a clip of her addressing the veterans has gone viral, being viewed more than 225,000 times in a tweet posted by Patriot Takes. Boebert, who’s about as rabid in  her support of former President Donald Trump as anyone can be, has never done any military service. Spouter of Trump rhetoric and avid gun owner, Boebert wouldn’t know an MRE (Meal Ready To Eat) from an Ass (an armored vehicle, like, say, a tank.)

But that lack of knowledge about all things military didn’t prevent her from committing this embarrassment during her speech:

“As your Congresswoman , it is my proper role to keep you free,” Boebert told her audience. “And what I’m fighting for each and every day, just as fought to keep us free in the greatest nation this world has ever known.”

Her comment prompted a good smackdown from VoteVets, a progressive PAC that says it “campaigns to relentlessly lift up the voices of veterans.” The organization has more than 1.5 million members.

“Oh no. No no no no no. @laurenboebert, you never fought for this country in any way, shape, or form. You’re a traitor. How dare you say this?”

Boebert then insisted she wasn’t delivering a political speech but then attacked President Joe Biden and current COVID 19 public health measures while insisting she is “not anti-vax.”

“This is certainly not a political speech,” she said at one point. “This is to honor you. But you can’t look and see what is happening when our nation is in the hands of people who do not cherish and love it the way that you have shown that you do.”

Later she added:

“Now there’s probably more medical mandates coming down the pike. I’m not anti-vax, I’m not anti any medical procedure. What I am is anti medical mandates . And what’s coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is not what you fought for.”

She also went off on a weirdly anti-transgender tangent during her speech, claiming that women with post-traumatic stress disorder “who don’t feel safe” about seeing a psychiatrist who is transgender — and “may have been born Alex but are now Alexa” — is “an issue we are seeing a lot.”

I swear the landscaping in this woman’s brain must look really peculiar.

She capped off Veteran’s Day with a tweet to her followers, featuring her and two veterans who, according to Newsweek, “were present during her sparsely attended speech” calling them “True American heroes.”

“Happy Veterans Day to all who served and their families! Yesterday, I was honored to spend time with Chief Master Sergeant Darla Sanders and Chief Master Sergeant Bob Sanders. True American heroes!”

Well, it was nice enough that she did this, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that there are reports that she met with organizers of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection (although she denies this.)

It’s a point worth pondering. Even if Boebert is dimmer than a 20-watt lightbulb.
