Trump’s Statement on the Rittenhouse Verdict is as Gross as You’d Expect

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN

“While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken.

“I ran on a promise to bring Americans together, because I believe that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.  I know that we’re not going to heal our country’s wounds overnight, but I remain steadfast in my commitment to do everything in my power to ensure that every American is treated equally, with fairness and dignity, under the law.

“I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law.  Violence and destruction of property have no place in our democracy.  The White House and Federal authorities have been in contact with Governor Evers’ office to prepare for any outcome in this case, and I have spoken with the Governor this afternoon and offered support and any assistance needed to ensure public safety.”

That’s it. That’s all a president can do. A president is the head of the Article II branch, the one that enforces the law. If the president doesn’t respect the law and the jurors, there’s a problem. (Recall problems with a president and jurors before?) The above statement is all one can and should expect from a president.

Indeed, even when one is an ex-president there is an expectation that one meets the dignity of the office. Trump never met expectations in anything save for some disgusting elements that we’ll save for another day.

The fact that Trump sees “expectations” differently likely explains his “statement” on the verdict:

Sigh. I suppose it’s futile. Trump will never, ever, understand that just because someone is found “not guilty,” doesn’t make them “innocent,” either. It just means they’re not convicted. One would think that a criminal law professor (“If that’s not self-defense…!) would know.

But he never fails. We just give thanks that we have a real president who put out a real statement from the White House, one of the types we would expect.
