The really sh*tty part is this guy is probably right.
But Evan Neumann best get used to the idea that Moscow (his preferred destination) and its climate, may feel like a prison compared to Mill Valley California. Neumann left the bucolic community to fight on the steps of the Capitol and is now on the run, hoping Russia bails him out.
As we said, from a purely criminal law point of view, he may well succeed. According to The Daily Beast [1]:
Evan Neumann [2] of Mill Valley, California, who fled to Belarus in order to escape criminal charges for his part in the attempted insurrection on Jan 6, 2021, has given an exclusive interview to Russia’s state media outlet RT. In his previous appearance [2], which was on Belarusian state TV, Neuman inferred that Russia was his preferred decomments to the notorious state media outlet seem like an attempt to ingratiate himself to the Kremlin and perhaps to land in Moscow at some point in the future. He provided RT with a tasty sound bite [3] that is sure to play well in Russian propaganda circuits: “I don’t understand why Russia is our enemy today.” During his earlier interview with Belarusian TV, Neumann condemned the U.S. sanctions against Russia and Belarus and described them as “a form of terr0rism.” Now this man—on the run from the American justice system—seems to be courting refuge from President Putin.
No sh*t? Old Evan might see the dynamic a little differently if he were a Ukranian seeking democracy and an ability to get out from under Putin’s thumb, or a Russian citizen tired of seeing the powerful hoard all the money to themselves and provide little to no income for workers. Also, good f’ing luck claiming a 2nd Amendment right in Russia.
Neumann is wanted in the United States on six criminal charges related to the Capitol riot, including two felonies for assaulting an officer and participating in civil disorder. Well, again. He could easily win in this situation. Russian doctrine has long depended upon having the United States destroy itself from within and having an American sitting there talking about Russia as a country that can stand toe-to-toe with the United States would be propaganda gold for the people that invented propaganda.
Of course, there’s a chance he’s wrong. In which case, he’s in real trouble, having been charged with assaulting an officer and then going on the run. We wish him the worst of luck.
