Ted Cruz’s Pathetic SCOTUS Hearing Stunt Just Blew Up in His Face and It’s Perfect

Alex Vitale, the author of The End of Policing is definitely having his moment in the sun. All thanks to Ted Cruz, who attacked his book as the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson headed into its second day. The Republican Senator from Texas was complaining about a list of books allegedly assigned or recommended at the Georgetown Day School, where Judge Jackson is a board member, and where her daughter also goes to school.

I’ve been writing about Ted Cruz for years now and he still continues to leave me befuddled. He’s Canadian, but his father was born in Cuba. So you’d think he’d be supportive of other people of color. But nope, he’s all up in it over Critical Race Theory in a way that would make Joseph McCarthy proud.

I mean really, what is it with this guy? He dumps his fellow Texans in the middle of a deadly snowstorm and heads to Cancun and complains that it should be illegal for President Joe Biden to announce his intentions to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court. He’s supported the idea of Texas seceding from the U.S. and was in especially fine form during the first two days of Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearing. He was just Typical Ted, doing things like acting condescending towards Jackson, interrupting her, and then getting in a fight with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). He was so obnoxious, in fact, that it led fellow Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (Nebraska) to call him a “jackass.”

Well, you know, Sasse has a good point.

Writing for Teen Vogue, Lexi McMenamin notes Republicans have pretty much gone off the deep end in their paranoia about teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT). Now here’s the thing about CRT: It’s a legal theory that “holds that racism is embedded in U.S. institutions and which is not, as such, taught in K-12 schools,” as McMenamin tells us in her op-ed.

Cruz and his ilk are blowing the CRT dog whistle in attacking Jackson and this is backfiring in spectacular fashion. As McMenamin notes, a poll released March 23 shows that Judge Jackson is widely supported by the public. She has, in fact, the highest public support of any SCOTUS nominee in history besides Justice John Roberts, whom she’s tied with.

2020 was a year of protests against racial injustices and Vitale’s book provides us with an insight into the beginnings of the abolitionist movement.

But if there’s one thing that’s clear it’s that Cruz didn’t really read the book. He’s just blathering on about it like he always does. This was not lost on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who couldn’t resist tweeting:

And this has been an absolute boon for Vitale, whose book is now selling like those proverbial hotcakes. In a media statement he writes:

“While I’m honored to be included in Sen. Cruz’s list of Critical Race Theory texts, this just seems to be another example of the Senator’s intentional confusing of a specific school of legal scholarship and the broader effort to shed light on the nature and history of racism in America. I can only hope that the Senator’s misguided attempts to suppress this history will backfire and inspire a generation of young people to seek out these ideas that are all too often absent in American schools.”

Indeed, this has backfired spectacularly and gloriously on Cruz. McMenamin notes the book has rocketed to the number 1 spot in its genre on Amazon.

And Vitale is poking more fun at Cruz’s absurd remarks. Who can blame him?

Here’s Cruz in all his stupidity below. He really topped himself with this one. 🙄
