Sarah Huckabee Sanders Uses the Texas School Tragedy to Justify Banning Abortions

Sarah Sanders, ex-president Donald Trump’s former White House press secretary has won the Republican primary for Arkansas governor, and as you might expect she used her victory speech to call for a ban on abortions while mourning the deadly mass shooting in Texas.

How typical of a Republican to do this. Even Sanders is all onboard with worrying about unborn babies, but after they are born it’s apparently okay if they become targets for the unhinged.

The Independent reports that Sanders called the shooting at Texas’s Robb Elementary School, “a stark and humbling reminder of just how precious life is.”

Of course, at least 19 equally precious children and two also precious adults lost their lives in the massacre but the fact that Sanders lumps abortion and this mass shooting together is kind of sickening and far too emblematic of Republican hypocrisy.

Huckabee Sanders announced her run in January 2021…but it’s not like she had to worry. With her MAGA cred and Huckabee name, she was guaranteed the win.

“Every single life has value and the most vulnerable among us are the ones we should be fighting for and protecting the most,” she told her audience.

“I can assure you that in my administration, that’s exactly what we will do,” Sanders continued. “We will make sure that when a kid is in the womb, they’re as safe as they are in the classroom, the workplace, the nursing home, because every stage of life has value.”

But like pretty much every other Republican there is, life is apparently not all that “precious” because she’s been against gun control from the very beginning.

When Sanders’ time as press secretary ended in 2019, her former boss Donald Trump openly encouraged her to run for governor. Funny thing is, however, she never referred to him once during her victory speech, perhaps because the smell has worn off and it’s not attracting as many flies.

During her two years as Trump’s spokesperson, Sanders rarely missed an opportunity to use the White House Briefing Room as a platform to attack Democrats, especially on issues like immigration and crime. She frequently wrangled with reporters and was generally viewed as a controversial figure during this time.

Trump was so far in her corner that in 2019, he called her a “warrior.” In his typical word salad fashion, he had this to say:

“Sometimes you have so many that it makes it more difficult. But we have some great — but Sarah was fantastic, and she is fantastic. She’s going to have a tremendous future. She has been a warrior, in a sense.”

Having worked for Trump definitely helped seal her win in Arkansas. It doesn’t matter that she lied constantly, Republicans will vote for her anyway.

But there’s another “warrior” on the horizon. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lambasted “pro-life” Republicans for their inaction regarding gun control in the aftermath of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The New York Congresswoman, a Democrat slammed GOPers who are all about overturning abortion rights but obviously don’t care about protecting Americans from gun violence.

“There is no such thing as being ‘pro-life’ while supporting laws that let children be shot in their schools, elders in grocery stores, worshippers in their houses of faith, survivors by abusers or anyone in a crowded place,” she posted. “It is an idolatry of violence. And it must end.”

While she has a point, it won’t end. And it will never end as long as Republicans continue to benefit from the NRA’S largesse. Which they do, quite handsomely, notes The Brady Campaign. And I hate to say this, but some of the Republican senators that we think of as more sensible are actually the ones who are benefitting the most. Mitt Romney (Utah), for instance, is at the top of the list, having received a total of $13,647, 676. Other notables living high off the NRA hog include Marco Rubio (Florida) with $3,303,355, Joni Ernst (Iowa) with $3,124,773, and insurrection supporter Josh Hawley (Montana) with $1,391,548.

Huckabee Sanders even admitted in her interviews with the Special Counsel that she lied to the press.

So don’t expect this to change any time soon. Because it won’t. As long as the NRA and gun manufacturers can keep funneling money into political coffers, more innocent people will continue to be murdered.

But remember: Republicans are “pro-life.”
