Conservatives are Now Boycotting Pizza Hut and the Reason is as Dumb as You’d Expect

Conservatives really love to boycott. There was a time when conservatives boycotted Walmart, which is hysterical for many reasons, but they boycotted them for selling T-shirts with “Impeach Trump” and “Impeach 45” [1] emblazoned on them. They also boycotted Netflix because they DARED to work with the Obamas [2]. They’ve boycotted Starbucks for several reasons, from them hiring refugees [3] (oh, the horror!) to them calling their cups “holiday cups [4]” instead of “Christmas cups”. Now remember, WE are the snowflakes.

Now they are boycotting Pizza Hut, and the reason is just as ridiculous.

Conservatives are calling for a boycott of the pizza chain over a book recommendation it recently made for its kids’ book club, which references a child that becomes a drag queen.

The chain restaurant sent an email to begin its summer program Camp Book It, which began on June 1. As June also marks Pride Month, the email included three recommendations surrounding the topic of the month, including one book titled Big Wig, which features a male child protagonist who decides to dress in drag for his neighborhood costume competition.

“These three books explore the uniqueness of every person, celebrate our individuality and encourage kids to see what makes us different, makes us special,” the email said.

After the absolutely vile conservative Twitter account Libs of TikTok posted a screenshot of the email, calls for a boycott came almost immediately. Because why solve the issue of gun violence when you can boycott a pizza chain?

Loony MAGA personality Brigitte Gabriel said, “Pizza Hut has gone full woke, now we must make them full broke.” Oh, how funny, it rhymes!

The head of CPAC was equally outraged, saying “Pizza Hut was started in Wichita and mostly funded by Kansans these folks would be appalled that their amazing American success story is part of the effort to destroy America and her children. These companies need to realize we won’t use their products any longer.”

Mind you, conservatives are mad at a company that is encouraging reading. Yes, a boy wants to wear a dress in one of the books. Guess what, that’s life. Some kids have issues with gender and it’s ok. It’s normal and nothing to be ashamed of, and nothing to be hidden. Reading a book about a boy who wants to wear a dress won’t make other boys want to wear dresses. But if there are boys that do, a book like that would really help them feel accepted, and I can’t think of anything more wonderful.

Pizza Hut runs its reading program year-round, partnering with schools during the school year. Children are allowed to read a book of their choosing and receive a certificate for a free pizza if they complete the book within the month. Its program has been operating since 1984, and I remember the excitement I would get when I would get my free personal pan pizza after reading a book, and my kids felt the same way. It’s a wonderful program, even if you’re not a huge fan of their pizza. (But no lie, their stuffed crust is the best there is, and come at me if you disagree.)
