Election 2020

The DOJ Already Has Enough Evidence to Prosecute Donald Trump: Attorney

Conservative activist and lawyer George Conway said Friday that members of the Justice Department should feel confident that they can in fact institute criminal cases stemming from the evidence that was shared Thursday night by the House select committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, The Hill reports.

“This case could be tried, we could do that,” Conway said during an interview on CNN, elaborating on how Justice Department officials should respond to the committee’s findings.

In light of all the evidence that’s been revealed, he also said:

“In fact, it’s going to be hard for them not to do it after seeing all this evidence.”

Thursday’s televised hearing is the first of several the committee has planned for this month in the hopes of proving its case that former President Donald Trump incited the deadly violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Per The Hill:

“Trump’s false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him due to voter fraud led directly to the violence of Jan. 6, according to the committee.”

Thursday’s public hearing included some pretty powerful testimony, especially from a Capitol police officer who suffered a concussion during the riot, and footage of the violence was also shown, accompanied by witness testimony that was shared by Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), the panel’s Vice-Chair.

“All Americans should keep this fact in mind: On the morning of Jan. 6, President Trump’s intention was to remain president of the United States despite the lawful outcome of the 2020 election and in violation of his constitutional obligation to relinquish power,” Cheney said.

Then she spoke directly to her fellow lawmakers:

“Tonight I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

Conway also pointed out that he believes the evidence presented by the committee far outweighs any presented by Trump and his allies.

“It’s not much to respond to other than Donald’s self-serving statements that ‘Oh, it was fake news,'” Conway said.

That’s not all he had to say.

“There’s a reason why Donald Trump has always avoided being cross-examined under oath as much as possible, why he didn’t do it in the Mueller investigation: He’s got nothing to say, and if he ever tried to testify in his own defense at a trial, he’d get creamed.”

As the Jan. 6 hearings continue through this month, each is intended to provide additional evidence that Trump engaged in irresponsible and illegal actions in the months following the 2020 election.

It is my fervent hope that the committee is successful in this. Trump should be brought to justice. I’m not holding my breath because the man seems to slime his way past these things, but I’m hopeful anyway.
