Matt Gaetz is Having One of His Worst Weeks Ever After Very Ominous Court Document Filed

The Justice Department has received new information that will surely boost its extensive and ongoing investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz’s alleged underage sex-trafficking crimes. And if Gaetz (R-Fla.) isn’t concerned about this he very definitely should be.

Queerty notes the DOJ has been investigating whether Gaetz paid an underage girl for sex and then traveled across state lines with her in 2018. Of course, Gaetz, a notoriously anti-LGBT lawmaker, is claiming innocence. But that’s not the story Joel Greenberg, his partner in (alleged) crime is telling the feds a different story.

Greenberg is looking at possibly 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to six federal crimes last year. Those crimes include child sex trafficking, identity theft, stalking, and wire fraud. Oh, and also conspiracy to bribe a public official. Of course, crimes like these are nothing new to Republicans. Sure, the GOP likes to call itself the party of “family values,” but as Slate notes, there’s a long list of Republican offenders.

Greenberg’s sentencing has been denied a number of times since he struck a plea deal in May 2021 as he continues to cooperate with investigators. Now as his work with the investigators draws to a close, meaning, of course, he’ll soon receive his sentence. But now, his attorney, Fritz Scheller, filed a motion Tuesday requesting that a judge grant permission to submit additional information about his assistance in the investigation into Gaetz, along with several other criminal probes, under seal, Queerty reports.

“Pursuant to his plea agreement with the Government and to mitigate the significant penalties he faces, Mr. Greenberg has been cooperating with federal prosecutors in active investigations currently being conducted by the United States Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Florida and the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. as well as in other jurisdictions,” Schelling wrote in the filing to the court.

Scheller requested that the additional information be sealed because the information it contains is sensitive and is in regards to ongoing investigations and prosecutions. It also contains “information regarding the nature and extent of Mr. Greenberg’s cooperation.”

“If this court sets a hearing on the motion, the proceeding will convey specific information to the court concerning Mr. Greenberg’s cooperation against multiple individuals,” Scheller wrote.

Wow, this sounds pretty juicy — ongoing investigations and prosecutions in Florida, D.C., and “other jurisdictions.” And it involves “multiple individuals?” Hot d*mn we have a party here. Who else is Greenberg ratting on?

Hmm?

Queerty cites a series of tweets by Lisa Rubin, a legal analyst who works for Rachel Maddow to explain what this all means. All things considered, this really means the situation doesn’t look good for Gaetz.
