Ivana Trump Thought She Would’ve Made a Much Better First Lady Than Melania Trump

Even before she became Donald Trump’s first wife, Ivana Trump was always a force to be reckoned with. A competitive skier who earned a Master’s degree in Physical Education at Charles University in Prague, Ivana married Donald Trump in 1977.

The couple divorced in 1992, and Ivana died last month after falling down the stairs in her New York City townhome, Insider reports. A memorial service on the Upper East Side was held for her on July 20.

But there’s one thing Ivana felt strongly about, say her friends, who talked to New York Magazine’s Intelligencer: They say she always felt she’d have been a better first lady than Melania Trump. For Ivana, Trump’s election in 2016 became an emotional time and it seems like all of that came to a head when he was set to be inaugurated in January 2017.

She was visiting the studio of fashion designer Marc Bouwer to choose several dresses but soon began crying. As Bouwer’s partner Paul Margolin stood by, Ivana became “hysterical” the Intelligencer reports.

Bouwer told the publication that people were cruel, yelling nasty comments at her and protesting outside her home.

“And I’m not even married to him anymore,” she told Bouwer and Margolin. “It’s not my fault!”

Ivana is the mother of Trump’s three eldest children, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka, and Eric and while the divorce was rocky, to begin with, they eventually formed a stable relationship. But even so, she apparently never got used to the idea of Melania being the first lady.

In 2017 while on tour promoting her book Raising Trump, she told ABC that because she was Donald Trump’s first wife, she was the true first lady.

“I [don’t] really want to call him there, because Melania is there,” she said. “And I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that, because I’m basically first Trump wife. Okay? I’m first lady.”

At that time, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump criticized Ivana’s remarks in a statement, saying they were “attention seeking and self-serving noise.”

Ever confident, Ivana later said that she would be able to perform the duties expected of a first lady with ease, but said she valued her “freedom.”

“Would I straighten up the White House in 14 days? Absolutely,” she said.

“Can I give the speech for 45 minutes without [a] teleprompter? Absolutely. Can I read a contract? Can I negotiate? Can I entertain? Absolutely. But I would not really like to be there. I like my freedom.”

I’m not an expert but I don’t think strained relationships between wives and ex-wives are unusual. All I know is I’m glad I’m not there. I always thought Donald Trump was a nightmare even before he became president.
