Mick Mulvaney Says Trump is Simply Too Old to Run for President, ‘Time for Trump to Go to the Sideline’

Mick Mulvaney, Donald Trump’s former White House chief of staff does not like the idea of Trump running again in 2024, and he said as much during an interview Monday on NewsNation.

Trump has, of course, been ruminating about running again for president in 2024 but hasn’t formally announced a presidential campaign. Right now he’s plagued by weighty controversies he himself created, and the situation for him has become more uncertain in the aftermath of the FBI’s raid of his Palm Beach, Florida home. He is now accused of “improperly possessing classified documents,” Newsweek reports.

Trump continues to echo his “attack on democracy” theme to bolster his stuck like Crazy Glue supporters, but Mulvaney and others are pushing the GOP, suggesting it’s time to move on from the 76-year-old former president.

“The Democrats are weak and I don’t think we should be offering Donald Trump for that reason,” Mulvaney said. “I think it’s also time for the next generation, anyway. We’ve got a good bench, we’ve got younger people. It’s time for Donald Trump to go to the sideline, continue to push the policies that made him so popular.”

Of course, Mulvaney has ideas about who could run, and none of them are bargains either. Although they would likely be better than Trump. He suggested Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as possibilities.

Like I say, there are no bargains among the bunch.

If the Democrats want to take a stronger stand, they need to start thinking about younger candidates as well. President Joe Biden is 79, and politically he’s no firebrand. The Democrats seriously need to consider younger candidates who might be more eager to take on challenges.

And Mulvaney’s comments about a more youthful president and perhaps a new face for the party align with recent polls. A poll released Tuesday shows DeSantis and Trump tied among voters in Florida (okay, technically it describes this as a tie but DeSantis maintains a minor two-point lead.) For now, DeSantis said he wants to focus on his reelection efforts in the 2022 midterms.

In June, a YouGov poll showed that a majority of Democrats and Republicans would prefer to see candidates other than Biden or Trump run.

Mulvaney, who resigned in March of 2020 has been critical of the former president ever since and completely broke ties with him in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“The same reasons I quit the job are the same reasons I would be very slow to vote for Donald Trump,” Mulvaney said. “I don’t think we need him. I’m hoping that somebody else runs against him in the primary because I think we can have the same policies without all the baggage.”

Despite all his legal troubles, Trump still seems to be in good standing within the Republican Party, however. Here, polls such as a Morning Consult/Politico poll conducted after the FBI raid show that almost three in five Republicans would vote for him in 2024. “His 58 percent support exceeds his 54 and 53 percent the Real Clear Politics average of recent national surveys in July and June, respectively, amid response to the ongoing January 6 hearings,” Newsweek reports.

And in a hypothetical rematch of the 2020 presidential election, polls continue to show Trump beating Biden. And of course, Trump has found a way to use the FBI’s raid in his favor to foster support for the midterm elections, effectively taking to his Truth Social platform, saying “Republicans could win many additional seats, both in the House & Senate, because of the strong backlash over the raid at [Mar]-a-Lago.”

The Democrats are staring out over a huge chasm. The 2022 midterms and the 2024 presidential election loom. I do not know what’s going to happen but I’m not confident. I’m worried we’ll be faced with a flood of Republicans who espouse Trump’s dangerous ideas.

The Democrats had better get cracking.
