2022 Midterms

‘I Can See Her Defeat From My House’, Sarah Palin Mocked After Losing Alaska Election to Mary Peltola

Sarah Palin’s race for Congress dragged on for a while but once it went down, it went down in flames on Twitter, where quite the brouhaha erupted upon word of her loss. Members of the Twitterati were more than happy to tap dance all over the failed vice presidential candidate, Tea Party Republican, and avid supporter of Donald Trump, according to The Independent.

Mary Peltola was finally able to declare victory Wednesday after the race was called. It has, of course, been weeks since voting ended nationwide, and most races have concluded. And with that, Peltola becomes the first Democrat in many decades to represent Alaska in Congress. She did so with strong bipartisan support, including an endorsement from Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, one of the state’s two members in the upper chamber, per the Independent.

Palin, the darling of far-right Republicans and former president Trump, blamed ranked-choice voting for her loss in the special election to Peltola in November. But when a head-to-head match-up was held in the second round of ranked-choice voting, Palin lost by more than 20,000 votes.

And The Independent reports:

“Her defeat will contribute to the single-digit majority that the GOP will control in the lower chamber next year, and makes it that much harder for Kevin McCarthy to secure the votes he will need to become Speaker next year; a number of Republicans plan to vote against him.”

On Twitter, Democrats reacted to the happy news of Palin’s loss by soundly ridiculing her and many didn’t forget she was a failed candidate for vice president and that she resigned from her post as Alaska governor as ethics investigations grew.

“I can see her defeat from my house,” posted one Twitter user, obviously referring to Tina Fey’s famous Palin impersonation on Saturday Night Live.

New York Congressman Ritchie Torres also couldn’t resist zinging Palin by referring to the SNL skit.

“Sarah Palin will now have all the time to watch Russia from her porch,” he gibed.

“Sarah Palin, in an effort to emulate Trump, lost yet again,” posted Duty to Warn, an account that describes itself as a coalition mental health professionals who are opposed to Donald Trump.

And there were plenty of Twitter users who were happy to see her career ending. Again.

Others voiced hope that Trump’s embarrassing midterm results would lead to promising news in Georgia’s upcoming runoff election on December 6.

And there were even more fun tweets. But before I go, I’m going to add one other lovely thing about Mary Peltola: She is the first Alaskan Native to serve in Congress AND the first woman to hold the state’s House seat, NPR reports. That’s a day brightener indeed.
