Georgia Says Charge Decision in Trump Election Interference is ‘Imminent’

Speculations are flying that an indictment of former President Donald Trump may be “imminent” as a judge in Fulton County, Georgia hears arguments stemming from a report probing alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Newsweek [1] reports.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and others appeared before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney to discuss the potential release [2] of a grand jury report connected to Trump’s election loss in the state in 2020.

Willis is not in favor of the report being made public and told McBurney during the hearing that there are numerous defendants named, and releasing the report could hamper their chances of receiving fair trials in the future.

While Willis didn’t name Trump specifically as she talked, she noted “at this time, in the interest of justice and the rights of not the state but others, we are asking that the report not be released because you have seen that report, decisions are imminent.”

Most of us have heard that phone call from January 2021 that was made public between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. In that now infamous call, the ex-president asked Raffensperger if the state could “find” more votes in order to help him to win the election in Georgia over President Joe Biden.

“I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have…because we won the state,” Trump said during the call.

And as soon as the call was released it spurred Willis’s office into action, launching [3] an investigation into any potential wrongdoing by the former president.

The Associated Press reports that McBurney and Willis seem to be at odds, with the judge and the special grand jury arguing that the report should be made public. The AP also notes Willis could recommend criminal prosecutions, but the grand jury wouldn’t have the authority to issue any indictments, and it isn’t clear who the indictments would be used for.

Nevertheless, the Twitterati are full of speculations, and users are asking questions like, “So, is it my imagination, of is TODAY actual Indictment Day? Because they’re blaring the word ‘charges imminent’ on @MSNBC in a way that doesn’t bode well for Trump’s already wonderful day. #popcorn.”

The AP also obtained a statement from members of Trump’s legal team, Drew Findling, Marissa Goldberg, and Jennifer Little. Per the statement, “To date, we have never been a part of this process… Therefore, we can assume that the grand jury did their job and looked at the facts and the law, as we have, and concluded that there were no violations of the law by President Trump.”

Well, that’s a rather fanciful way of looking at it, anyway.

I’m going to drop this nugget from Newsweek right here:

“A handbook for The Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia states that ‘the Grand Jury cannot include, ina report or general presentment, comments that charge or accuse identifiable person(s) of misconduct. This, the courts have said, can only be done by a true bill of indictment or by a special presentment charging such person(s) with a crime,” the AP reported.

This is an interesting turn of events, but I hope it really is true that an indictment for Trump is “imminent” because we’ve been hearing this forever, it seems.
