GOP Hypocrisy

House Republicans Demand To Know Why They Couldn’t See Hunter Biden’s Nude Pics

Not content to be happy that they now control the House (barely), Republicans are now using their newly gained government oversight powers to zero in once again, on Hunter Biden. Even though the son of President Joe Biden is in no way connected to the government, DailyKos reports. Of course, they are mostly focusing on his financial transactions but they are also weirdly obsessed with something that’s a bit more personal.

James Comer, Chair of the House Oversight Committee is calling in former Twitter executives for a public hearing focusing on why, during the 2020 elections, Twitter put a lid on sharing some information from a laptop that allegedly belonged to the younger Biden. As you might expect, some of this included emails ostensibly suggested Joe Biden’s alleged involvement in some of Hunter Biden’s business dealings. Much of it, however, is the part that has Twitter trolls salivating and antsy to spread all over the social media giant and managed to gain the ire of Elon Musk’s dude Matt Taibbi who was out of sorts that this had been suppressed, are rather, um intimate photographs of Hunter Biden. Dick picks, to be specific. They were being posted as part of a determined campaign led by a Steve Bannon associate.

Twitter was understandably trying to block the non-consensual posting for political reasons of nude photos of the adult son of a public figure. In some cases, Twitter even learned about the posting of these photos (and videos) from the Biden campaign. For reasons that make little sense, Musk and Taibbi think this is some sort of ginormous scandal. And Comer, being the bottom feeder that he is, seems to want to draw this out.

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) speaks to reporters after a closed-door House Republican conference meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

So naturally, he’s placing Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s former head of legal, policy, and trust, Yoel Roth, the platform’s former head of trust and safety, and James Baker, the former deputy counsel, under the microscope in a public hearing scheduled for February 6.

“Your attendance is necessary because of your role in suppressing Americans’ access to information about the Biden family on Twitter shortly before the 2020 election,” his letters to the former execs read.

Conversely, Comer wasn’t the least bit bothered, when as a ranking member of the oversight committee, he fired off a memo defending Washington Commanders team owner Dan Snyder regarding the pervasive sexual harassment that permeated his organization. Even to the point of including photos of some of the victims of the harassment in the memo. The victims’ lawyers described this as “sexualized and salacious photographs of former cheerleaders.”

Hunter Biden has definitely caused quite a few headaches for Joe Biden, shown here with 2-year-old son Beau at the White House on July 4th

So here’s a guy who’s fine with defending “sexualized and salacious photographs” (of women, of course) in one official document and now he’s all bothered about why Twitter isn’t sharing nude photos of Hunter Biden, who hasn’t given his consent to release the photos. Comer obviously wants to weaponize this against Joe Biden, and if that isn’t bad enough, there’s this: a former college girlfriend of Comer’s has come forward to allege he abused her mentally and physically and drove her to get an abortion.

That said, Comer does really want to find out if there’s more evidence, or, per DailyKos, “something he can fudge into the appearance of — financial wrongdoing that involves the president.” I can’t however, write about this without bringing Donald Trump into the mix as well, especially his dealings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“No one seriously contests that Hunter Biden’s career has been helped by being the son of a prominent man, and few argue that he has consistently made good choices in business or life. But all of the reliable information indicates that his father has stayed the hell out of it,” DailyKos reports. “Just as Donald Trump tried to damage Joe Biden’s electoral chances in 2020 by blackmailing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce an investigation into the former vice president surrounding his son’s business dealings in Ukraine, House Republicans now want to damage Joe Biden’s presidency and his 2024 electoral chances by creating the appearance of corrupt involvement in his son’s business dealings. It’s the same basic attack.”

What all this really means is you can now expect the GOP to get plenty worked up about nothing, even if it sounds like something. Comer has now fired off a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen demanding to see bank activity reports not just from Hunter Biden, but also from James Biden, Joe Biden’s brother, and other Biden associates. The thing is, banks sometimes file suspicious activity reports (SARs) to flag iffy transactions. And yes, that sounds suspicious, and you’ll soon be likely hearing a lot of Republican screeching about this. But most SARs don’t come to anything. A bank might question something but then finds out there’s a perfectly sensible explanation for what looked like a problem but isn’t.

But, ever since the Obama administration, we’ve all found out that Republicans excel at making something out of nothing. They’re just doing it all over again is all.
