2024 Election

Steve Bannon Issues Serious Warning to Trump, and It’s Highly Doubtful Trump Will Listen

Steve Bannon has given his former boss, Donald Trump a stern warning about a supposed addition to his leadership team. There’s one addition in particular that the former Trump adviser thinks is a particularly bad idea, Newsweek reports.

Trump has recently said he plans to announce his presidential campaign staff in the key primary state of South Carolina on Tuesday, and a special event will be held in Columbia. Republican governor Henry McMaster, who’s already voiced his support for Trump’s 2024 bid, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R), who is likely to soon endorse the former president, The Washington Post reports.

And it’s that last addition that has Bannon in a big dither. On his War Room program on the conservative news network Real America’s Voice, Bannon described Graham as a “snake” and warned Trump about having him in the picture.

“I have no earthly idea why [Graham’s] around [former] President Trump” Bannon said. “He’s a cancer (um, well so is Trump.) He’s a cancer, that’s metastasizing. President Trump’s gotta be warned. There’s nothing good that comes from having [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell’s mini-me, the snake, Lindsey Graham around you at all.”

But South Carolina isn’t going to be easy-peasy for Trump, since two other prominent Republican lawmakers — Senator Tim Scott and former Governor Nikki Haley are considering running against Trump in 2024. So Trump may believe Graham’s support to be significant.

“Nikki Haley is probably our first South Carolinian since we voted for George Washington that has really had a chance of being president of the United States,” Katon Dawson, the former South Carolina GOP chair told the Post. “And I think the Trump folks are going to run into that history.”

This isn’t the first time Bannon has gone postal on Graham for his purported failure to give Trump the support he needs. In January 2022 Bannon accused Graham of being part of the group of five Republicans who secretly agreed to support at least part of President Joe Biden’s political agenda. Each kept mum about this for fear of losing voter support.

“The five traitors—and this is Republicans and this is the scumbags and slime balls you have here in the nation’s capital… they agree with what [Biden] is doing and they would actually vote and support him but they are afraid of, wait for it, the War Room posse,” Bannon exclaimed during another broadcast of his show. “They’re afraid they will get primaried… And they’d be off the money train, they’d be away from the trough. The hog would be away from the trough.”

My, Bannon loves to use such flattering words, doesn’t he?

“We need those five senators to have enough guts to step up, we’re going to find out who you are,” Bannon said. “Have enough guts to step up and tell us, Lindsey Graham, who you are. You five, we need you guys to step up to the plate, Lindsey Graham and tell us who you are.”

I’ve been writing about Graham for many years and I’m sure his likely answer would include something about being whoever the voters want him to be. But Bannon isn’t the poster child for basic human decency either, since he was charged with money laundering and conspiracy. His upcoming trial is scheduled for November.

Graham is no saint, to be sure. But it would just be nice if Bannon would turn the mirror around and get a good look at himself every once in a while.
